89 TR Engine install...help please!

    Hi everyone. I am working on a 89 TR replacing the right side headgasket..what a job getting the head off. The job was send to me to just remove the head because it had been to 2 supposed ferrari mechanics and they couldn't remove it. Well..now i have the job reassembling the engine along with restoring the colors, detailing, and installing the engine. I have the engine pretty much done but, i need a little help on a couple things. One problem is the engine electrical harness layout..i am not sure if the harness goes under the injection and just the general placement of it. The second problem/question would be a little advice on basic installation tips. I do have a few pics of the engine during the cleaning-up and restoring the colors if anyone is interested i'll post them. Thanks in advance for any help!

    Now now...be careful what you say about ferrari mechanics...as they are the one's you will be needing help from here... :).

    I have no idea how to fix what you have got, but pics would be helpful...

    lol..i have no disrespect of an actual ferrari tech but, it seems like anyone that has ever touched this customers car tells him they are a ferrari tech. Anyway, i'll get the pics.

    Sorry for the lousy picture....but here is the general layout of the wire harness on the motor. Take time to route the wires carefully and you should be fine. The harness goes under the fuel injection system. Watch the area at the front of the motor around the water outlet (gooseneck) as there's a lot going on right there with the alternator hookup, etc....

    thats a great help! thanks a lot! I can now get started laying it out. I gotta ask..can you get the ac lines on after the engines installed with pump mounted? any tips on installation?

    Actually when removing a TR motor, it isn't necessary to disconnect the AC lines from the pump...just remove the pump and hang it up out of the way. But if everything was unhooked...I would say yes...you can hook the lines up once everything is bolted up.

    Keeping the AC pump system sealed and pressurized is not how the shop manual says to do it. But you will save yourself a bit of grief by just unbolting the pump and use a bungy cord and hang it up. But to unbolt/bolt the pump you will have to do it when the motor is nearly in it's final position, just as the engine is lowered or lifted. You will have to stretch and strain a bit to get everything bolted up. But it is a huge time saver. I learned this from ferrarifixer Phil down in Aussi-land. Another great fchatter !!!!!

    Thanks again! The engine was shipped with all accesories removed including all fuel and electrical related items ..pretty much a longblock w/ trans. I have the engine mechanically assembled again but, i just wasn't sure about the electrical harness layout. I now have the alt, ac, and air pump mounted and the harness is kinda laying in there. I just wanted to make sure the electrical was routed currently before the cis/injection went on. do you have any other pics of the harness of just more pic of the engine assembled?

    ok the numbers are F.113A040. What i really am looking for is the area in the front of engine that Carguy metioned where a "lot of stuff was going on". I am really not sure what parts of the harness connect to the engine and what goes to the car. I know eventually throught the process of elimination i can figure this out but some direction would be super!

    Here are a few pics during the paint and clean-up. The lower intake runners (only 1 was painted in pics) and engine block were painted with Dupli-Color high heat aluminum and the red is Dupli-Color cherry red. Now, i did paint the valve covers with the red wrinkle finish (try saying that 10 times in a row..lol) but, the color wasn't right so i went over it with the cherry red and looked closer. The wrinkle finish on the upper and lower intakes were good and only needed color restoration. Anyway, kinda done this clean-up/painting quick to just help out.. i'm sure could of have spent a little more time but, for free where do you stop?

    I love how beautiful the motors look after a clean up and paint.

    I still wonder about the wisdom of painting a motor. At some point, I would suspect that the paint is going to start pealing off, and may look horrible.

    The key to getting paint to stick, is the prep. And there isn't any easy way of getting an assembled motor spotless and absolutely clean. I can see taking parts off, blasting them, and then painting them. That might hold up.

    I tried painting the intakes, and part of the motor on my Ninja 900. In a couple of months it looked like crap, and I wished I had never done it...

    Why not just clean the heck out of the motor, and gently polish it.

    Have you guys really been having luck painting motors? I could see painting the cam covers, as these can be thoroughly cleaned after removal...but painting the block itself??? After it was drenched in oil???

    a couple more. The lower intakes are just sitting on there just trying to figure out where it all goes. It looks like i took the pics in the dark in some of the pics but, it was actually pretty bright in there! Anyone know how to change the brightness on my cheap-o camera? it's a Nikon coolpix 2100.

    Preperation before painting is the key to keeping a finish on the part. I use a good prep solvent along with some acetone in the really filthy areas. All the paint i used was an engine enamel good to 600 degree f. I don't think long term adhesion will be an issue. Could you come over and show me how to "gently polish" this thing in the next day or so? ;)

    Here is the motor from my first TR that I did....it turned out pretty good, but was not correct. But the motor was really bad before the work so it's still a huge improvement. As has been said, preparation is the key to getting paint to last. I've never had any issues from painting the engine block and heads. Once the paint is baked on it's pretty durable.

    I did the same nuts and bolts resto on my current TR but I made huge efforts to duplicate the factory finishes and the results are very good (Tooting my own horn - sorry).

    I'm with Bill, I think you're doing a pretty fine job, most expecially if its for free ;)

    I recognize that the exact original colors are ideal, but your first one looked pretty darn good to me from the picture.
