I've seen these around a couple of places.
A Ferrari F2001 Formula 1 racecar, as Schumacher and Barrichello raced them just after 9-11, without an sponsors' logos, and with the nosecone painted black.

My question is, did Hotwheels actually produce them like that, or did a bunch of people happen to do the same?

Hotwheels produced them like that, in (I believe) a small series. I think there will also be models around that have been modified by model builders though.

Very cool, I always thought that was a great tribute, very tasteful and respectful.

Mattel did not produce them straight from the factory. Two or three companies sold them in lots of 100-500 both in 1:43 and 1:18. The companies would repaint them, then re-package in the F1-2001 boxes. If Mattel had been the originator, the boxes would have special markings.

I don't think it was a subject that Mattel wanted to get involved with - profiting from disaster. Though I do not think they objected, since these companies bought hundreds of the F1-2001.

Ebay would be your only choice. Search for "Ferrari Schumacher Monza", since Monza was the track that this paintjob was raced at.

The same companies then made the 2001 USGP special, which had small American Flags on the barge boards.

As I understand it from a dealer I buy from in England, mattel supplied less than 1000 painted but unmarked cars to a couple of "cottage shops", who in turn painted them accodingly (black nose), and then put them back in the original Mattel Hotwheels box. Both in 1/18 and 1/43.

I have two of the 1/18, and one of the 1/43. The boxes I have are different than the standard Hotwheels box in that there is a waving American flag in the background.

Also, a now out of business slot car company called Proslot made a 1/32 slot car version of this. I managed to get two of those.

Amalgaman, I think that is their name, made a small run in I believe 1/5 scale at a price over $2500, unfortunetly I did not get one of those.

I would check Ebay USA, and Ebay UK, many times different listings. You must search under Ferrari black nose, and try Ferrari 2001 Monza. That's how I got mine. The 1/18 is approaching $200 now. I got my second one from Mark at Replicars, so try them also.

These cars look great with the 1/18 pit crew which come without the spnosor decals applied (see photo).

And this was a terrific tribute on the part of Ferrari. If I remember correctly, only Jordan did anything else to acknowledge 9/11. I think Mr. Dennis and Mr. Williams maintained their arrogance during this time.

    Good luck.

I followed my own advice from my previous post. I went to Ebay USA, searched Ferrari black nose, came up with 3 from one dealer in England, all of the Ruben's version. I have two Schumacher versions, so I bought a Ruben's version today. Now there are two. About $175 with shipping.

Mattel did not do an official version. I asked Mattel Designers at the New York Toy Fair in 2002 if they ever would...the answer was no.

When I had ScaleCars.com we did a run of about 50 cars or so in 1/18 using BBR decals. I dont recall any being there these days

Minardi and Benneton/Renault both had special version cars with small American flags on the barge boards and different wording on the wings. Minichamps made all four in 1:43. I think there may have been some others, since Minichamps promised more, but you are right on Williams and McLaren not changing the paint for the cars.

    010220 MINARDI PS01 Yoong
    010221 MINARDI PS01 Alonso
    010107 BENETTON FISICHELLA
    010108 BENETTON BUTTON

Also in 1:43, Action ALMS Corvette and Minichamps ALMS Audi with special graphics used on the real cars.

010938 AUDI R8 ROAD ATLANTA FLAG CAR

I only saw one recently, for sale on eBay Germany. The price was reasonable, but unfortunately the seller was not willing to ship outside the country. Shame, 'cause judging by the prices others have paid, he would have gotten a better price.

    I'm still searching for more...
