The use of "short" gears in a Daytona transaxle has been discussed here in the past. At the suggestion of the car's owner, I'm posting my assessment on the topic.

I just installed a gearbox fitted with the 9/35 ratio ring and pinion into a car whose engine I'd built and modified some time ago. Took her out for a test drive last night, and all I can say is, WOW! What a difference. This is the ratio that should have been used in production. The acceleration change is dramatic. I was truly stunned at the difference these gears make. With two guys on board, from a rolling start the car went into wild wheelspin in first gear at full throttle. A normal "granny shift" into second resulted in more wheelspin. This car ran well before, but now, it's amazing. I'm jealous!

Where did you get the part? How difficult was it to install? There has been all the talk about installing a new R/P basically being impossible or something to get it right. Sounds like crap to me.... but what is your take?

This will be my next big mod after the suspension is all done up.

    Hi Bill,

Get a hold of Motor Motori or Sport Auto in Modena...they have a few newly made up sets of the 8 x 34 which works out to a 4.25 : 1 final drive ratio.

Who needs a Daytona in California that will go 175mph ? The 3.88 set you put in your car will still let the car do 150 with ease. The 4.25 set will pull over 130mph.

We run the 4.25s on a SI Factory comp car at the short tracks and it will out accelerate the BB/LMs with ease. We use the 3.88 on the medium tracks and the stock ratio at Road America and Le Mans.

    Cheers,

    Bill

Doesn't this 8/34 ratio make it a very weak pinion?

The comp cars in Europe have this 9x35 with a close ratio 4th and 5th gear. For the high speed tracks like Monza the original 4th an5th can stay in.

The gearbox was purchased with the set already installed. It's a bit noisy, and I doubt that's related to the ratio. Looks like a box built from two or more others, as the internal gears have varying degrees of tooth wear and pitting. Nevertheless, aside from the noise it's pretty amazing.

    Bill Noon,
I like the idea of the 8/34 setup. How do I contact Sport Auto? Send me a PM if you prefer. Thanks.
