Anyone with Guards Red '90s Porsches have problems with oxidation? I recall looking at a '92 968 at a dealership in Michigan a few years ago. The fenders and fuel door had oxidized to a light pink.
Just a little over a week ago, I was brought a '95 993 Cabriolet with a very similar problem. The passenger fender, hood, and engine cover had oxidized to pink. The car only had 34k miles, but it had been left outside of a hangar at a small airport for long periods of time, and the owner thought that the location may have had something to do with it. I've posted before and after pictures below. It took about 9 hours to buff it out to look acceptable. I was curious if this is a common problem with Guards Red paint of this vintage.

My dad had an 87 944 in guards red. Never had a problem with oxidation. I gues some of it could be due to neglect?

My guess, if properly waxed/polished that never should have happened. Unless Porsche had some bad paint?

Some colours seem more prone to damage than others, or at least it seems that some colours are more noticeable when they get this sort of damage. Any car left in the sun for years will have some sort of damage but remember Guards Red isn't true red, some variation in the paint can be orange or pinkish.

Actually there is no such thing. 944's had India red (mistaken for Guards). India red was a 'bit' more orange.

probably not with Jim's 944. How does JUST the hood fade and nothing else?

I had an '87 928 S4 that tended to fade to a less than pleasant pink. I found mineral oil would help the paint stay looking red for quite a bit, but it would still eventually fade to pink.

They never had bad batch of paint per say.....Guards Red was always more prone to the effects of sun and seasonal neglect than any of the colors. What you see is common.

That's what I found odd about the cars that I've seen. The driver's side fender and the bumpers never faded a bit on the 993 I posted. And only certain panels on the 968 that I saw were faded.

It gets more sun, if there is limited shade available, users will try to put the windshield or back hatch under it, and leave the hood out. I had to park my 944 out all year last year, and the hood was purple, but the roof less so.(but still oxidized). I believe that Porsche did not clear coat their non metallic paints, which is why the oxidation is much more noticeable on colors like guards red, etc...

Good ole single stage Guards Pink, I mean Red. My friends brother almost freaked he saw the oxidized transfer of his 944 on some polishing pads I was using. His blood pressure returned to normal once he saw Guards red again lol.

Yeah, it was definitely not clear-coated. We got a Guards Red '05 Turbo S in today, and it's a little faded too. Not near as bad as the 993, but still needs a buff.

The red paint (I don't remember the name) on my 1992 VW Corrado fades badly (particularly the rear spoiler) and buffing it does not last long at all, it just fades again. No clear coat from the factory.

Tornado Red. It's also notorious for oxidation.
