I bought a 91 Testarossa and found it had little power. It turns out that 3 of the 4 cats were bad. Replaced the cats with super flows and a Capristo exhaust. Car now has more power, however, it idles poorly and misses, back fires, badly at low RPM. Further, at 70 mph in 5th gear it acts like it can’t decide if it wants to go faster or slow down. Prior to cat and exhaust change it had none of these problems other than lack of power. Oh ya, mileage has also dropped from approx 17mpg to 12mpg. Took it to the shop and they “fixed” it. Came back worse than when it left. CLUES? HEELLLPP!

Backfires on fuel injected cars are generally due to an air/fuel mixture that is too lean.

If your prior owner had 3 bad out of 4 cats, then he probably had an A/F that was too rich (burns up the cats).

That probably means that your O2 sensors are shot.

...and that's if you are lucky. You could have a timing or cam issue...but start with the cheap fixes first (e.g. O2 sensors first, then check your A/F ratio).

Port Orchard, WA. I took it to Cavalino's in Bellingham. Actually headed there in a few minutes for their new opening. Not sure that they will want to see me.

First of all, welcome to the club. Just curious, did the they talk you into getting a new exhaust system after a complete check up first, as in the O2 sensors and sort like the others said?

I would probably take your car to either Ferrari of Seattle or Mr. Carlo Durante at Alfa of Tacoma. Carlo is extremly busy so be prepared to leave the car with him for awhile, but you can trust that things will be done right. Carlo is the technical director for the FCA-NW and has been working on Ferraris since at least the 70's. Anyway, for the pre-techno-gizmo Ferraris, and a 91 TR falls under that catagory, there is no one better than Carlo, until proven otherwise.

No, they didn't trey to upsell me or anything. The exhaust was changed before they ever saw the car. As to Carlo...... I can't even get him to return a phone call. He may be the best, but that means nothing if he doesn't do any work.

In most areas of the US you have to have your cats installed.
