well took it to a good auto detail shop yesterday to have him detail the outside and remove the swirls in the paint (appears to be from prior owner wiping it when dry?)
it looks better but most of the swirls are still there !
by the way its a nero/ black car.
he said he was coming up with black on the polishing pad and appears the car has no clear coat . well i don't think they put clear coat on them in 1991 ?
    comments and suggestions welcome

Of all the black cars I've owned, 3 of them, they all showed swirls much more than other colours. Even after a polish, after a few washes the swirls would come back. I wouldn't sweat it , unless these were deep swirls.

I have done this for a living, I now have 9 cars most of them came to me in horrible condition paint wise. Find a pro !! I now use a rotary with wool pad for the bad stuff, followed with a yellow or orange pad on a Porto Cable random orbital then go to a black pad using Sonax Perfect finish then seal it with Permanon Platinum. Most of these products are new technology, I never use wax. Check out Todd Copperrider on Google. i.e. Detailimmage.com. Good Luck

If you do it yourself the swirls come out

I have done 3 cars this year

All swirls come out, griot has polishes that work

    You need patience
And finish with a hand polish

All depends. Swirl marks can be caused my many things. Touching a not perfectly clean paint with a car-cover or by washing/rubbing the paint with 'dirty' or 'contaminated' tap water. And then frequency of these things would also come into play.

actually he is so right, your cloths are more importantant than polishes..
Modern clear coat finishes are not as effected as our vintage naked paints.

The TR has a clear coat - if your pad comes up black, it is likely the clear coat is gone. I would not recommend polish or wet sanding at this point.

My personal experience shows that the paint is pretty darn thin on the TR - not a lot of room for polishing/ wet sanding.

Time for some discussion with a high end paint shop.

Could it be a respray with a different paint system?

    Rgds,
    Vincenzo

I don't think this is correct (at least not the 1st generation Testarossa). Paint was single stage. If you have a clearcoat it has been re-sprayed.

You may be right.... I have yet to find a definitive reference.

Way back when, I did some research and concluded that the Glasurit Line 55 was used on my 1990 - but was never 100% sure.

If you have a definitive reference - please let us know.

    Thanks,
    Vincenzo

Cars were single stage with exception of metallic colors.

That sounds like the process my new detail person does. We just went over this the other day. He was able to clean up the TR nicely. His specialty is black cars. I've seen a few , no swirl marks.
