Has anyone done a formal comparison (magazine or YouTube) between the gt3 RS and speciale??
I'm in Stuttgart right now and may get a chance for some wheel time in an RS. If I do, I'll give you my thoughts vs Speciale
Having owned a 2015 GT3 before I traded it for my '14 458, I suspect there will be little to compare for fun factor both on street and track. That is not to say that the RS with it's massive down force and mechanical grip on a bigger track wont be competitive with the Speciale. There is no way on the street that a 911 GT3 series car is as much fun emotionally as a 458 series car.
I would expect the RS to be pretty similar to the base 991 gt3 except with a little more grip, little more power and little less rear visibility.
Chris Harris did a review between the Speciale and "just" a 991 GT3, I believe. Edit: Found it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ysaE9i2RNyE
You can't beat mechanical grip and down force. My pick would be the 991 GT3 RS without doubt. Hence why I have one on order.
Unfortunately my RS drive didn't happen this week. But the RS isn't hugely different from the regular GT3 and there are already many comparison between the GT3 and Speciale.
Also saw this Lava Orange RS while I was there... I haven't liked this color in any of the photos that I've seen. But when I saw it in person, it looks really sharp. Now I like it! Image Unavailable, Please Login
Pretty sure the speciale wont habe a chance against an rs. On the street like stated above I can see the speciale beeing more of a fun drive. I liked the standard gt3 but have not driven the rs yet
these comparisons of cars in terms of lap times are a bit curious to me. i think about them along three different aspects. first, what is the lap time difference for a gt car pro driving? in other words, someone capable of driving the car to it's absolute potential. also, i say 'gt car pro' as most prototype of open wheel guys struggle to adapt to a gt car for a while given the roll etc of the car. second, what is the lap time for a regular person? someone who maybe does trackways, leaves some of the aids on etc - let's say they run in 'RACE mode' that leaves traction and some stability on. and, third, what is the track they are using? highly unlikely that the speciale is quicker at a track like Laguna that's about braking and low speed corners. conversely, at tracks like watkins glen or mosport with high speed sweepers would favor the longer wheelbase ferraris.
i have driven a 991 GT3 and a Speciale back to back at Buttonwillow btw. there was ~2-3 seconds difference in favor of the speciale. the porsche brakes better and handles low speed corners better. the speciale kills it in higher speed corners though. my prediction fwiw! the Speciale is 0-1 sec quicker than the RS at most tracks
Looking at the numbers: GT3: 475 hp @ 8250, 325 lbs torque, 3153 lbs, 245/35 front tires and 305/30 rears RS: 500 hp @ 8250, 338 lbs torque, 3131 lbs, 265/35 front tires and 325/30 rears I can't find the numbers, but I do know the RS also has shorter gearing.... So yes there's going to be a difference, but how much? It will be interesting to see...
Don't forget the better aerodynamic and the wider turbo chassis. I suspect its great advantage lies in the curves.
Sounds like the Speciale will still out gun the Gt3 RS by a long shot with the RS being even better in tight corners. From what i have heard there is not a huge improvement over the gt3.
Correct. The speciale is not a huge improvement over the Italia and traditionally the RS is not a huge improvement over the regular GT3. The difference between the most hardcore version vs regular ones are 5-10% at most.
The RS rear spoiler generates 345kg downforce, I heard this is three times more than the GT3 generates and means 80% downforce from a GT3 Cup car. BTW, the RS is 5km/h slower than the GT3 (310 vs 315km/h).
