Depends a lot on the car itself. It is true that many of the more rare or performance oriented cars were coupes. Most all of the race conversions back then were of course coupes built specially from a body in white by the race team themselves. The turbos originally came only as a coupe. However, I have sort of been looking for an early car (specifically a 1969 T Targa like I used to own) - and a really good one is over 50K! Remember, too, that in 1969 my T Targa was listed for about $8,700. A T coupe could be had for well under 8K at the time. A lowly 912 coupe was well over $4500, or as expensive as a Corvette!
Looks nice Michael, definitely a lot of car for the money. Part of the problem with the tail on that car is it's a turbo tail with the large rubber lip. That tail looks great on a turbo car with the flares, but just overwhelms a narrow body car. Unfortunately it's common. If you put a proper Carrera tail or even better an SC tail, it will look very clean. The ducktail would also look good. Nice buy!
I had an '89 targa. Loved it... Cons: Wind noise (I should have sent the top to Dan Petchel for a full rebuild) Body flex (scary when you jacked it up sans top) A/C had to work harder Noisy at freeway speeds even with the top on (road noise) Security risk (had a nice pair of shades lifted when I left it parked with the top off once) Tops are spendy to replace (Over $20,000 for a new one) Pros: Looked great (I prefer the targa over the coupe or cab) Perfect for top-off cruising Less wind than a cab Safer than a cab (rollover bar) Ultimately, I sold it- mostly due to the fact that the 993 has better A/C, and is available in AWD, plus the coupes are quieter. Current: Cheers, Paul.
great post! by the way, used tops can be had for under $800.00 on the forums. i just dont need 2 black Porsches now ! Image Unavailable, Please Login
