When I got the 991S I had made my mind to get the new 991 turbo when it came out later on. I would probably avoid the first year this time and get the second year, i.e. in 2014. So my slightly longer term goal is to have a garage with 991 turbo as my DD and 458 as the second car.

I was wondering what you think about the 911 turbo vs the 458? I am sure some of you have owned or driven both? Clearly, it is as fast or faster than the 458 and the new one will be even faster. I realize naturally aspirated feels different, and one is considered exotic, the other not, but what are your thoughts on the fun of driving them?

Traded my 2010 911 Turbo for a Scuderia

No comparison in terms of "fun factor" or "wow factor"

Yes the Turbo was stupid fast but other than that it was one of the most boring cars I've ever had.

As a DD Turbo is a great car.....as a car to get your "rocks off" it is not.

Forget about the turbo. Boring. Wait for the 991 GT3 -- or pick up a 4.0L 997 GT3 RS. There simply is no comparison between the 911 Turbo and 458 in terms of fun-to-drive. But the 997 GT3 has some of the same spirit while needing more driver input because of less technological control and the manual 6-speed.

If you are going to have the 458 as your second "fun" car, what is your criteria for a daily driver? My point is that depending upon how often you get the enjoy your "fun" car, and if you are only going to use the DD to drive a few miles to work and back, is "fun" really a criteria for the DD? If you don't have kids or regularly transport business clients, the Turbo would make a great daily driver ... incredible performance and reasonable comfort. I can't imagine you'd want a GT3 as a DD ... but everyone is different.

Based on the feedback you can read throughout this forum, there are several owners who use their 458s as a DD.

Regardless, a garage with a 458 AND a Turbo is a pretty special place.

I use a 911 turbo as a daily and the 458 is a weekend car. The 911 is more practical and every bit as quick to 100, esp at altitude. The 458 is more fun but I wouldn't want to drive it everyday.

I've got a '10 Turbo S and a '10 458. I love them both. The Ferrari is more lively but the Porsche is quicker off the line and feels more planted. I use them about the same amount - I favour the 458 for a balls-out blast but prefer the Turbo S for a long road trip.

I live in the city and i use my 458 as a DD. When i feel lazy, i use my chauffeur who drives a 7 series long wheel base. I don't see the point of getting a 911 turbo as a DD. Use the 458. If you want something that's a bit more comfortable and fast, perhaps a M5. The turbo is just a bit more comfortable than a 458, sits only 2 and storage sucks like the 458. Both are just too similar and for me not a good combination.

Uh, the 911 has a back seat, unless Germany pulled a fast one and changed something with the last 40 years

It may look like a backseat but its not a backseat. Its decoration.

I own a 2012 Twin Turbo and 2012 458 Italia. I keep the Ferrari in California where I can drive it more on freeways and enjoy it and the Porsche in Vegas . Honestly as a daily driver, I always jump into my Cadillac (yep) CTS V, with 640hp, Brembo Brakes, Recarro Seats, and magnetic ride suspension . Fast, comfortable, and especially if in traffic or long huals.

The 458 is the most fun, no question. However, I am not a fan of three pedal cars like the Porsche "GT" series, especially if stuck in traffic. These are "track" cars, not street cars, especially for daily driving.

I truly enjoy the Porsche, fast, firm, and the transmission is more comfortable for me in automatic than the Ferrari. On the race track, when you take away all the assists, it is a challenge to wring all you can out of it. A great car. Best

The Porsche is a better daily driver, gets better gas mileage, you can get more stuff in it, maybe a little quicker in acceleration, might even handle a shade better - but you know what? It's not a Ferrari. That's all you need to know.

If you haven't yet, you need to see a dealer to try the 458 out. Then you will know.

I remember when in the early 80's, my dad had bought a Porsche Carrera Targa which I borrowed frequently and just loved it. A year later, he switched to a 328 GTS and after having driven it, I realized that this was simply a different animal.

30 years later, the 911s are basically the same cars with some cosmetic changes over the years (to try to overcome the essentially flawed design in terms of weight distribution etc.). The Ferraris on the other hand evolves with every new model and the only thing that remains is the passion.

If you ever have the opportunity to go to Maranello or to be present there during a launch of a new car, you will feel this passion for yourself and I can promise you, you WILL get hooked.

My DD is a Maserati Quattroporte S which is great if you have a family but still want to enjoy the sound of a Ferrari engine :)

I daily drive my 458 and have no issues. My last DD was a 997, which was the perfect DD, but find the 458 less jittery.

I guess I do not accept that the idea of a DD means "boredom." I think it means comfort, reliability, ease of driving in traffic, and ... fun. Sorry, but The 911 Turbo meets only the first three of these. If you just want lots of torque there are plenty of options, and many of them such as the Panamera Turbo S are even more comfortable and will take on more passengers and gear.

I agree the 911 turbo back seat is for decoration only or for a double amputee.

It is understandable we all see the same thing and respond differently. For example I believe the SL 55 (Supercharged) is heads and shoulders above any turbocharged Mercedes and spent months finding the a 2008 (last year they made it) with 1,000 miles on it Jan 2010. Drive one vs any turborcharged Mercedes and tell me what you think. Power that is immediate and useful on any freeway.

Sitting next to each is my 1981 Porsche Turbo and 2012 Twin Turbo. They look allot alike, and frankly it takes a great deal more skill to drive the 1981 than the 2012, but the technology and optios are signficant.Trae

    I rank my cars:

Ferrari 458 - The more you drive it the more you appreciate it
Cadillac CTS -V -----------------Long trips, unbeatable
Porsche Twin Turbo - A technological masterpiece with phenomenal transmission
Mercedes SL 55 ----------San Diego to LA , getting around all traffic -terrific
Bentley GT - Fast with panache". Tried RR - ugh!!
Maserati GranTurismo - more noise than power, but beautiful
1981 Porsche Turbo - dangerous and challenging - not for the faint hearted

There are a couple other cars but like my Jeep, although a great drive, "functional" as long as you don't care about gas mileage.

My kids are too big for the rear seats now but when they were younger, they were fine for short trips.

Some varying opinions here. I am now thinking that perhaps I should own just one super car at a time so as to fully appreciate them and drive them enough to justify the purchase. If I split my miles between two sports cars, neither will get enough mileage. So I'll try to use the 458 as much as possible daily. For family stuff and where impractical to use 458, I have a 5 series sedan and toyota suv to do the trick. That means I'll sell my 991S after receiving delivery of 458, the porsche is also red, so having two red cars at the same time, would not be very imaginative.

Yeah I use an '11 Cayenne Turbo for my DD. You can get one for slightly more than a 911S (thanks to a lot of development costs being shared by VAG) and its still fun to drive. Gives me a little oomph while carting the kids around, sloshing in the snow, camping trips, home depot runs, road trips, etc. I couldn't imagine owning two full on sports cars (maybe when I retire).

I owned a porsche turbo and gt3. Imo porsche turbo is the most boring souless porsche. Gt3 most lively fun even as a daily 997.2 gt3 is manageable. If i buy a porsche again defenitely na power.

If its a fun weekend car go for italia over any p car.
