You are quoting retail prices from private owners or dealers. At Manheim auctions which are only open to dealers I am seeing 2009 997's for low 40's

The Air cooled cars continue to increase at a steady pace. Expect higher and new record setting results at Monterey next month

Early longhood 911s are incredible investments (and even better drivers). ANY good quality early 911S is $100k + or -. 67S 911Ses $180-250k. The thinking is that the early 911 S cars will keep pace with the 73RS appreciation. As 73RSes rise in value 67Ses will as well. Along with all other early Ses.

When a 73RS was $250-300k an equal 67S was maybe $75-100k. Now that 73RS have become $500,000-750,000 its expected (and already happening) that 1967 911Ses are going to routinely sell in the $250-350,000 range. Collectors are considering these 2 cars the best of the early cars.

I personally know of 2 very well known classic Porsche dealers in California who are restoring 67Ses to be for sale late this year...both with asking prices in the mid $200s.

I recently turned down what I was told is a world record price for my perfect 1973 Carrera RS Touring. I think they still have a little ways more to go. Either way, they are absolutely incredible cars.

The 991 first year depreciation curve 'percentage' is not any worse than any other production car, less than most, although that percentage may equal more dollars. Mine 991s is likely worse than most as I use it as a DD and have already accumulated over 23,000 miles in 12 months.

Another rapidly appreciating modern 911...3.8 GT3RS. Why 4.0s are now $250-300k cars. You can still get a 2010/11 3.8 RS for less than $150k.

Another way to have a guilt free (depreciation free) fun car.

This may be a short term hold depending on how the new one is received. 4 years into 458 production, the clamor for MTs has died off and everyone has drank the kool-aid. I suspect the same will happen here, and the non-4.0s, built in decent numbers will begin to go down.

Having owned several Ferraris and many Porsches I can attest to the fact that Porsches have a massively larger buying audience. Especially when you get into the 'special' 911s. GT3s, GT3 RSes.

Look at the 360 CS and the 430 Scuderia for a modern comparo. Awesome cars to be sure. Tiny market. Scuderias are still depreciating (albeit at a slower pace vs years past). Please don't misunderstand..I love these cars! The modern limited edition (CS, Scud) 8 cylinder Ferraris have yet to prove to be appreciating assets like the modern limited edition GT3 RS porsches (3.8s and 4.0). Once the new 458 Scuderia rolls out there is every reason to believe there will be more downward pricing pressure on the 'normal' 458s.

'Normal' 458s and 'Normal' 430s hold their value for a few years and then follow a predictable depreciation curve. The 430s seem to stay X thousands more vs the 360 and I am sure the 458 will follow the same pattern.

I sold a 430 Scud and a California this year. I also had (and kept) a 10 GT3RS, 89 Speedster, 67 911S. In the last 12 months all of those cars have increased in value by at least 10%.

Bottom line, first world problems :)

Buy a 996 GT2 or GT3 NOW! They are the last of the analogue GT cars as the 997's had lots of electric nannies

I think we need to remember these cars last forever and are almost bullet proof. Yes they are expensive but it can be with you for life if you want.

I have owned many 911's and recently at mecum I bought the least desireable 911. This is the runny egg front end and water cooled. It was a 2002 Turbo 911

It had very little milage,24K and at $35k was a bargain. Just a wonderfully engaging car to drive. These cars are so well built it felt like a new car designed in 2002.

    I just love these cars.

    Best

Incorrect, the Turbos did not have the runny egg thing (8 year 2001 Turbo owner...until last week :(

Only the early regular 996 911s had that horrible look.

WOW! an e28 M5.... i started with the econo job and really liked the car and thought if this had a little more everything, that would be the car for me. 1988 M5 drove one daily for a few yrs. knocked the snot out of it, even tossed the engine (luckily my mechanic had just purchased a wrecked M6) i took the engine and the BBBs wheels/tyre and was on my way for another couple yrs.
at 167,000 miles sold the card on ebay for $8500... i was stunned. A college kid bought it from across the country with dad who was not happy and did not get it. Those were well sorted cars! i still have my 83sc cab (first yr back with the drop top) and a zip down rear window.

I bought a 991C2S a 1 1/2 years ago for $125k and with 26k miles it is now worth $85k and dropping. I just bought a 1988 911 Cabriolet M473 w/wide body and it is worth about what it cost new and rising.

It really is confusing that Porsche marketing calls 964, 993's and 997 and such 911's. now I read the title to this thread and think about cars made between 1965 -1989 but nooooo we call 964's 911's besides many other model's, why did they not start sooner with 356's as the all number model number? then we could have hit 50 years of 356's? get it a lot sooner? Now people say "I have a 1991 964 911".. sounds like a serial number! Rant over

930, 964, 993, 996, 997, 991 are all internal classifications, not official model designations. The official model designation for all of these cars is "911." Likewise, the cars classified internally as the 986, 987, and 981 are all Boxsters.

And Porsche is not the only manufacturer to use internal classifications to distinguish between different versions of the same model. The internal classifications of BMW and Mercedes Benz models are just as well known as those of Porsches (for example, internal M3 classifications of E30, E36, E46, E90/E92/E93, etc.).

The market is the arbiter of truth. Water pumper 911s are a poor facsimile of a real 911. Any real enthusiast will appreciate the inherent worth of a genuine, unadulterated 911.
Lightweight, pre-Toyota brass meddling, non-power steering, hand-built jewells that are a true 911. There is no substitute.

Then you mod the heck out of 'em to achieve perfection.
