As most of us know (or dont know) by now, January 3, 2006 will start 92.3 WXRK-NY radio to be known as FREE FM, all talk radio. Howard Stern in the morning will be replaced with David Lee Roth on the East Coast.

So what do you folks think? My sister thinks DLR will fail miserably. I disagree. I think the man is just nutty enough to make it work. Ive seen him in concert a few times thru the years and not only is he a great entertainer (more than a singer) but the life this guy has led since he was a kid, he has to have some seriously funny and interesting things to talk about. I think if he has a decent writer by his side like Stern has thru the years, he will do fine.

    So lets hear it...............

I think 92.3's decision to switch to the "Great Rock. Period." format was one of the best decisions they ever made. The playlist -- at least for the first week -- was so awesome that I stopped listening to XM, because nothing compared. It was just non-stop GOOD FUN rock songs. No DJs, no crap, just fun music 24/7. Kinda like JackFM, but with good music all the time. :)

Then they brought the DJs back on the next week and started edging back toward the old 92.3 -- top 40 alternative songs, many of which suck. It's still better than it used to be, but more or less we're back to where we were.

I think their recent decision to lose the music and go all-talk is one of the stupidest decisions in the history of radio. There will be no more rock/alternative station in NYC. That basically leaves us with JackFM (20% good, 80% annoying no matter what genre you like), WPLJ (all boring, all the time), and Z100 (now serving 99.9999% salsa & merengeR&B).

On Jan 1, I'm buying a Sirius FM transponder and going XM & Sirius full-time. Goodbye terrestrial radio. :)

Absolutely, they were playing one good song after another during that time. Now they are back to the new trendy garbage...

DLR is going to fail terribly, no one want's to hear van halen's front man talking about things. Maybe people will listen in the beginning just to witness the change, but I don't think he's going to be able to hold an audience. If they want to do something to keep listeners, play good "older" music in the morning. We use to have 92.7 but that changed over to some spanish station...

we shall see what happens. :)

Sat Radio can be a bit annoying though, due to the fact that you need line of sight with the Sat's. For example, the signal cuts out when you go under overpasses on the LIE and NJ Tpk - even if you're going really fast and its only a split second. There's also no repeaters in the Holland/Lincoln Tunnels, so I switch to good 'ol FM when I'm stuck in traffic in the Tunnels.

I think the all talk format is gonna suck period. I heard that's what they wanna do eventually. DLR will do fine but he won't set the world on fire i think.

I agree All talk 92.3 is a pretty bad decision. If i wanna listen to talk radio, ill flip to NJ 101.5. They have some decent talk shows. 92.3 music has sucked the last few months.. That leaves me with 104.3 or 105.5 when I can get the reception. 105.5 is a pretty decent station, but its out of Dover, NJ and the signal isnt like a powerful NY radio station. If you travel south on the Parkway, over the Perth Amboy bridge area, 95.9 WRAT is a fun station, but it wont come in north central NJ or NYC.

That's one of the things that was slick about Morpheus. If you found a song you liked, you could check out others playlists & find more slick stuff which you would never hear on radio.

As far as radio, the group is right. No station great for rock.

Jazz? 88.3 WBGO But like any station, some of the jocks are good, some are less than stellar.

Salsa & Merengue? Love it. I'm waiting to head back to LQ :) Kinda get the idea the population demographics is shifting??? :)

Regular radio sucks. Except for Stern in the morning, I don't listen anymore. But like Rob said, I seem to loose XM all the time. I think I get a better signal on my cell phone! But I still like it better then radio. From the sports stations to the news, to the Rock. I have to get Sirrus because Howard's great. I'll miss him.
