I just purchased a 1992 348 TS and the foam insulation under the hood is sagging and looks dingy. I called Dan at Ricambi American and he suggusted a silver metallic material from JC WHitney. If I wish to enter the car in a concours in the Preservation class, will I need the original material?

Also on the engine bonnet on the right hand rear most edge there is an electrical button switch which makes contact with the crossmember the bonnet rests on at the rear of the car. At first I thought it might be an underhood light, but I have found none. There is no information in the owners manual either. I thought maybe it was for an aftermarket alarm, but there are no other switches or signs of a system.

Lastly, in the owners manual and in some pictures I've seen there seems to be available a center console glove box. My car does not have it, and there are no apparent extra holes for mounting a cover. Any ideas out there? I just have an open compartment.

Thanking you in advance. David Curro

    1. I don't do Qtips so I can't tell you what is the answer for 1.
    2. But, as for 2, the switch is for the center mounted brake light which looks like a small reflector at the read edge of the engine lid, but it actually contains five little bulbs inside. You step on the brake and the little plate is energized and completes the circuit.
    3. Don't know that one.

That is a TB center console. Not just a lid but the entire shape is different and I believe only on 89 and 90 TB's.

Yes, I think you will -- but defer to the actual concours judges here on Fchat.

    Correct.

Original material or something just like it.

I have been unsuccessful finding anything like it BTW.

For the rest of us who might want to use it, anyway...... Did you find JC Whitney part number or catalog page info / description for this stuff ---- I'm always searching for good insulation materials for various applications.

I have a 1990 ts and the orriginal was a brown colored foam that was half gone and turning to goo. After some inquiry I purchased a foil backed sound proofing material from a marine supply. Once trimmed to fit and contact cemented in place the results are pleasing. This material is designed to sound proof a engine room in a marine enviroment.

The foam was gray when new. It turns brown then falls apart.

In regards to the center console glove box cover. I've owned a 1990 348TB and also a 1992 348TB. The 1990 model had the leather bound, lockable center cover but the 1992 model did not. It just had an open compartment.
Hence I believe the spec was changed and the cover was deleted as part of the 1992 model change (Ferrari also changed the Bosch injection system (from M2.4 to M2.7 if my memory serves me correctly) and moved the battery from the rear of the engine bay to the front of the LH front wheel, also changed the suspension set up and fitted rear wheel spacers)

There is a brownish foam hood pad available for an early porsche 944 available from pelican parts that is close to oem. It is a special foam that melts to smother an engine fire.

Here is the information dan provided as a suitable replacement for the original foam on the engine bay cover:

Daniel Pass, Feb 28 09:42 (EST):
Unless you are taking the car to Pebble Beach, you do not want the foam under the engine bay. It is obscenely expensive, and very poor quality. On my 348, I used this:

Bonded Logic Heat/Sound Insulation - JCWhitney
    with this adhesive:
Bonded Logic Contact Adhesive - JCWhitney
