I am new to this foum... does anyone have any knowlege of the 1992 TR at Ferrai of SF? It's red/tan with 19k mi on it. FoSF isn't quite sure if it has had 2 or 3 owners. They originaly took it in on trade from a "good customer" and sold it to the second owner - they have service records showing a third owner but no one at the dealership recalls the third owner, they think it might have been an accounting error! As with most cars at a dealer it looks clean and care for, but I would have PPI before making a deal. Any help would be appreciated.

BTW - I have really gained a considerable amount of knowledge from reading the comments on this forum and respect the opinions of many of the veteran members.

    Thanks for your help

While you can't trust CarFax alone to tell you about your car's history, it should tell you how many times the car has been registered, meaning how many owners it's had.

One 360 I was interested in had "sketchy" records and no one knew how many owners it had. The CarFax report showed the 5 year-old car was registered 5 separate times.

You may need to piece the car's history together from various sources.

You can also run the VIN through the Bureau of Automotive Repair's "Smog Check" website to see its history (Pass or Fail) while in CA.

Thanks - I have covered all those angles - I should have been more specific in my request. I know as much as possible that can be learned from "all" on line sources. I am currently trying to get the previous owners name, with a little luck I will contact him directly if I can locate him. My concern is that "carfax' come back with 2 owners since new, passed smog every 2 years, and "vehicle service" @ "service facility" (what ever that means) at least once a year from 1999 till 2003 ending at 17k. Passed emission again in 2005 w 19k. One could be overly optimistic and look at these result and ass u me that the vehicle has had all services performed. Or you could be a sceptical cynic like me and be concerned. What I need is gumshoe info - someone who may have some personal knowledge of this TR.

If the plates were still on it - I could at least get the R/O info quickly - but that would be too easy.

If FoSF has any service documentation, the owner's name should be listed. While they probably won't give you copies of the service docs with the previous owner's name on it for you to keep, they should let you thumb through the stack they have on-hand. At this time you can write down the name(s). I did this for the car I mentioned below, I then "googled" the person's name and eventually found the guy who bought the car new. He was incredibly nice and very helpful in pulling together the car's past.
