It's that time again. I need new tires for my 92 TR512. In the past I went with OEM type, Pirelli PZero Rosso. This time, I would like to upgrade to a more modern tire. I have no concerns for wet traction, as I never drive in the wet. I was originally thinking of going to the DOT track tires, either Michelin Pilot Sport Cup or Pirelli PZero Corsa. However, the rear size is not correct as they only come in a 295/30 ZR18 rather than the correct 295/35 ZR18. In proper size I was thinking about Michelin Pilot Sport PS2. What do you guys think? Pirelli PZero Rosso, Michelin Pilot Sport PS2 or something else?

    Dear Ferraristi,

Your first post.....in the TR forum...no less!

Welcome and a big "Freeze....Miami Vice ! " to you.

    I know you drive a 512TR and it's a different car....

but it really does look like a Testarossa.... :D

I have Michelin Pilot Sport 2's on my Lamborghini Diablo VT Roadster. Pretty good tire and sticks well. Even though you don't need it, good wet weather traction.

....something the P Zero's weren't really good at.

I agree.. Yokos are very good tires but some prefer to stay with Pirelli or Michelin... Just a matter of preference... I am sure many will chime in and steer you in the right direction...

I just did the Bridgestones (do a search for 512 TR tires) and love them. Ditched the low mileage but rock-hard PZero Rossas. The car rides far better, dry and wet handling (if you care) much improved. Before you order online, check your local Firestone/Bridgestone. I was shocked that they were more reasonable than the online 'big discount' guys.

I had to get new rear tires this week and studied all postings here...

After reading and following my hart, I decided to stick to the nice 295/35 Pirellis Zero Rosso.....

Only problem is that they last only 7000 miles...so every season a pair...

Also the rims will be sprayed Grigo now for a change...

Stay away from the Perrelli's they are a junk tire. Side wall bulgeing is a big issue, and they wear out very fast.

No such things happende to me ... the Prielli tire are overhere seen as fine tires.

And most important: they are compliant to the + 300 km/h certification in Europe.

If you have tires of a type that is not certified for the specific car and you have an accident, the insurance company will not pay the damage ....

Anyone have thoughts at this time on 512tr tire replacements?

I don't see the P zero directional tires offered in the front sizes (p235/40 18)

I see good reviews for the pilot sports and the sizes are available for the 512tr.

So, do you go with the concours tire or a new brand? Thoughts?

Hands down the best tire today is the Michelin Pilot SuperSport

The PS2 is far Superior to the Pirelli and the SuperSport is even better than that as it's the successor to the PS2. Lots of design updates to what PS2 which was the hands down best performing tire of its time & still a Great contender.

SuperSports were not made in both the sizes necessary for the TR's front & rear, but now they are.

I had Pirellis on one of my cars for about a week before I threw them off the car with Great disappointment. The Yokos & Bridgestones are Good too, but Bridgestones are pricey.

But all around Best performing tire is SuperSport...

Believe it or not- The single most important improvement to handling & performance one can make to a car is tires. The right set will transform your car and renew the love affair with your Ferrari.

What Good is a long distance runner in dress shoes??

I have changed out the tires on all of my cars that have an application size for SuperSports- Go to Tirerack.com & read the reviews and performance data and I think you will agree

I'm not sure about this, but I suspect the Pilot Super Sport might have less tread depth (like to Pilot Sport Cup) because it's a track-oriented tyres, and deep tread blocks result in excessive deformation - and therefore heat build up - on track.

If that's the case, I would prefer the PS2 which is a road-oriented tyre and might therefore offer more range before wearing out.

I have SuperSports on my E39 M5 and they wear fast...

PS2s are great tires. I have no recent experience of Pirelli but I also use the Yokahama on a daily driver but its not as good as the PS2. Ive been using PS2s on my track cars and GT2 for years. The GT2 has had them on for 25,000 kms and still good life on them. Ive tried all sorts of tires on my track cars goodyear, nitto (worst tire yet), bridgestone, toyo ect. Love the PS2 cups but they really only last a few track days or 6 months on the street.

Im using BF Goodrich for the first time on the Testarossa couldnt get any other tire. No idea how good they are yet.

Does anyone know of any skidpad tests in the TR with modern tires? All I've seen is a paltry .87 for a Testarossa, which puts it barely above the 1992 Mustang LX 5.0 (.84)! And that's a solid axle, leaf spring, much taller car!

I wouldn't expect anything great for a TR in terms of lateral G.

At the wheel, I find that my 512 TR rolls a surprising amount and I can feel the high center of gravity (engine mounted above gearbox) pulling the car over. Then reassuring understeer arrives quite early (which is no bad thing, as I don't much fancy trying to catch an oversteering TR).

The TR is a Gran Turismo road car designed with other prioprities than ultimate road holding...

Yeah I agree about the TR's GT roots, but on paper it has lower center of gravity than the Mustang, dual coilovers in the back, wider stance, much better anti-sway bars, and independent rear suspension! Did the OE tires just suck?
