Or former owners, let's please see photos of your cars. From the posts I've made about my 928 I've had some very positive replies, and it seems I am by no means alone in appreciating the unique qualities of this most misunderstood of Porsches. So I'd like to have a thread to gather together owners and pics of their cars. Here's mine... Image Unavailable, Please Login
Buy em! I want cup III's. These are 19 inch. I want something OEM. You wanna trade? I don't remember the brand of the wheels. They cost about $1900 w tires if I remember right. Let me know if you have some wheels you wanna swap Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
Looking good guys! You can see mine here: http://home.austin.rr.com/jemorrison2 I am out of picture posting space for this site. There are also lots of pics of my cars on RennList if you want to catch them there. James
A 928 is on car that I REALLY want to own before I die. It was the other biggie out there with the 308 when I was in High School 82-86. Loved them.
I'm over my pic limit too. Mine is black. The best use of a 928 is at 80+ mph for several states and several tanks of gas. Then you will understand the 928 thing. http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v640/Carl44/?action=view¤t=Frenzy20072001425.jpg
Here ya go.........My '78 928 vin 9288100579.......579th off the line 1st year of production. Also enjoy the C4 that shares the garage. Geffen Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
Thanks, may have to ante up for a membership.... black/black '87, 5 speed, lsd and aaaalllllllll the maintenance done.
My wheel/tire combo is stock...Don't think you want the manhole covers... PM me a price, I may be interested.
Or better yet the A-bahn in Germany above 120mph! YEA BABY! I saw 165mph in my '92 Euro GTS! What a car! At those speeds you watch the gas gauge go down pretty quickly! AMAZING machine! Great cars, great buys, amazingly affordable, but not really quick or powerful by today's standards where 400HP cars are a dime a dozen and 350 is no biggie at all it seems! Few, VERY FEW, cars are as refined or enjoyable or IMHO as pleasing to the eye as the 928. James
Nice combo Geffen. My 308 lives in the garage, but the 928 lives the outdoor life. Image Unavailable, Please Login
Some nice looking cars in this thread. I'm thinking of a 928 (probably an S4) to run as an everyday car, as I'm getting sick of the the expense of running a new car everyday and I can't imagine that 928s will get any cheaper. I'm also rather fond of the 928 as many of my formative years were spent riding in the back of the four consecutive 928s that My Dad ran as everyday cars back in the 1980s are there any particular foibles to look for that are not mentioned in the ususal buyers guides? Thanks
If looking at an a/t, you need to know what "thrust bearing failure" is and how to check flex plate tension. Go to Rennlist and read the sticky at the top of the 928 forum. p.s. an auto would make a better DD than a 5 speed if you see much stop and go traffic. If I were looking for a 928 a/t, I would want an '89.
Concur with Carl. '89 is probably the best overall year to look at from a cost perspective. It has the electronic dash (which is good if it works right bad if you have to replace it) and no airbags so you can put a different steering wheel in if you want to w/o the airbag issues. S4's are GREAT value right now. Be sure and buy a good one. The most expensive 928's are usually the ones that initially cost very little! A/C systems (particularly those w/ the rear A/C) can cost you an arm and a leg to fix. The vacuum solenoids that move the flaps can be rebuilt these days, but they are behind the dash and almost impossible to get to w/o removing the dash (about $1k for R/R w/o doing anything else). S4's seem to have power steering leaks (I don't see them on my OB's, S's, or GTS's though!) Be sure you have a good new T-belt installed just in case. Good insurance. To rebuild an S4 motor that has broken its T-belt is in the neighborhood of $10k-$13k... YUCK! It is usually cheaper to just buy a used S4 motor from a good source that is a known good one. That is still not CHEAP though! Have seen some radiators that have either sprung a leak or had the bad situation with an internal leak where the water and oil mix...NOT GOOD! If you can check the auto trans fluid be sure it looks and smells good...no burnt smell which might indicate some slipping bands and a future rebuild. Generally they are quite bullet proof. I have put over 10,000 track miles on my '88 S4! Great cars! Good luck and be sure and get over to Rennlist...TONS of great info there. James
Dang.. I MUST be in the wrong line of work. I removed & replaced the pod and complete dash of my S4 three times while I owned it. Heck - even drove it around with the dash removed (but pod in place) and various switches dangling or tied with string for a couple weeks while waiting for a part.
David, Yea, you can do that! I have seen several track cars with the main dash stripped out of it and pretty much only the pod remaining! Saves some weight I'll tell you! Go to any Porsche shop that knows 928's and ask them how much they charge for dash R/R... I bet they will tell you something between $800 and $1100! I think they do make money over book time on that job but not as much as they do on some other jobs, plus getting everything plugged back in and working properly is a real PITA so no shops like doing the job! Best, James
I have had 4 928's and if I recall, I once replaced the vacuum solonoid in an '87 simply by removing some trim pieces. A little PITA but manageable. Just about every fix you need for a 928 is documented with pictures through Rennlist over the years. Great cars.
The 89 auto turned out to be a bit of a dog (it was only a mile from home so it didn't waste much time or effort going to look at it). I also looked at an 87 manual (with optional LSD), which drove really nicely. It had had a thorough mechanical overhaul but needed some work (AC inoperable and a few other electric issues), might see if it is still unsold in a few weeks I will make a very low offer and see what happens. The owner of the manual was quite a 928 enthusiast, he also had a 1979 928 manual (I would imagine very rare now), which he was kind enough to take me for a run in as well. The smaller 4.5 liter engine sounds really sweet.
I have an '87 5 speed with lsd. That sounds like a good way to go if the owner is a real 928 enthusiast. It's not all about purchase price with the 928s, that is only the initiation fee. The real dollars are in the maintenance and history; if those are really good then the car is a bargain regardless of price.
