Hello all, can someone please help me out here. I am just about to buy a RHD 93 348 Spyder. I've had a look on the VIN decoder on http://www.ferrariclub.com/faq/vin.html. On this car's plaque on the steering column, it reads 348 tb and the VIN-ZFF!!!35XXXXXXX. Now my question is should it say 348tb or 348 Spyder? and on the VIN, this idicates its a tb not a Spyder.

Is this normal? Could the VIN decoder be incorrect? Could this car been converted from tb to Spyder? Strange!!!

    Thanks in advance.

At least Stateside, I thought all 348 spiders were 94 or 95.

ZFF...35........ indeed indicates that the VIN 's for a 348 TB. A proper 348 spider would have 43 instead of 35. That the car would be converted from 348 TB to spider would be the first time I hear of. I know of some Tb converted into Tb Zagatos, one into a barchetta, some into Tb competition. I've know of a 348 Tb turned into 355 GTS, but ... a Tb turned into a spider seems odd, better start of with a Ts as these cars already have a more rigid structure. Would you like to share the full VIN?

    Run Forest run!

If the vin number doesn't match up somthing is really fishy. That is why they put vin numbers on cars. If the numbers don't add match then its not legit. To make double sure they didn't just swap the vin plate, have a look at the number that is stamped to the mounting area for the shock towers in the engine compartment. If all the numbers don't match then someone has by fooling around with vins.

Right, Ernie. Three camps modify VINs: stolen cars, high mileage cars, and wrecked/rebuilt cars...all three camps try to use VINs from similar cars so that autocheck/carfax gives a glowing report rather than rollback history, auction history, lease history, rental history (especially for the Las Vegas 348's), stolen history, totaled/burned history, etc.

When autocheck/carfax turns up a "duplicate title" on a 348, in my past experience 10 times out of 10 the car for sale was trying to clone a better title history by copying another's VIN (which buggers the good car that got copied, too).

A buyer doesn't want to be anywhere near such a car. If stolen, the police can seize it from you without any compensation. If you are caught with a cloned VIN, you the buyer can be held liable.

Thanks all, as it turned out, the plaque on the steering column has been changed for some reason. The VIN on the build plate, on the body and me local dealer all matched up. So, all looks good!!!

NO...........all does not look good. There is NO need to change the plate on the column. It is AGAINST THE LAW to fool around with the vin.

I HIGHLY suggest you walk very quickly, no, RUN away from this.

    Two threads, I didn't notice.

This is VERY fishy. If the numbers on the car don't match, and if there is a number on the car that does not match the number on the title, then the car may not be legally saleable. Have the seller produce the title. Or better yet, just forget the whole deal.

Why would anyone change the steering column cover?
