1976 Turbo Carrera with Colorado plates “Heidi” was owned by Dr. E. B. Liddle (mentioned in an Feb '76 Colorado PCA newsletter ad selling his '72 911S). This was an early 1976 Turbo Carrera and before it was registered with personalized Heidi plates, it was licensed with Colorado "KS 16" plates seen at an Aspen track event with my ’75 930.

Some images of the 8 & 9 x 15 inch new Fuchs that I recently purchased from Porsche Classic. The 9 x 15 Fuchs appear to be refinished original Fuchs with new production numbers added. The 9 x 15’s are super light; even lighter than the 8 x 15’s. I’m convinced that Porsche’s 2010 production of the 9 x 15’s would have sold out immediately if there was decent tire availability (had to go with Toyo Proxies 235/50/15). One of the cool features of the 3-liter 930’s is the ability to mount these iconic deep dish 15 inch Fuchs with the smaller 2.7 Carrera RS brakes (and no need to remove your 27mm spacers). I’m keeping my original 7 & 8 x 15 inch Fuchs - still waiting to mate them with Pirelli CN36 tires.

An additional photo of Dr. Liddle’s 1976 Turbo Carrera with Colorado plates KS 16 (later “Heidi” - also note the Alpine Mountain Region PCA decal in the rear quarter glass). This photo shows his car on Goodyear slicks and 15 x 9, RS 3.0 Fuchs on the rears at Woody Creek, Aspen, Colorado. The 15 x 9’s were very popular on 3-liter 930’s for track events and were an easy on/off when equipped with slicks (my ’75 930 was equipped with 15 x 9's for all track events including the 1975 Seattle Porsche Parade). Fuchs produced the RS 3.0, 15 x 9 wheel through 1977 when it was discontinued after Porsche introduced 16 inch wheels.

Even when you remove the 3-liter 930, 21mm spacers in the front, 15x9’s with factory 3 ET offset would probably only work with very low lower profile tires. However, the stock Fuchs 15x8’s will work on the fronts although the spacers may need to be removed depending on tire diameter. The Carrera RS 3.0 was equipped with 15x9’s in the rear and 15x8’s in the front and 930’s have the same fender width whereas the 3.0 RSR’s had 15x11’s in the rear and 15x9’s in the front but the fenders were wider than 930’s. Those who tracked 930’s in the 1970’s must have loved the versatility of just sliding off the factory spacers in seconds and going with wider wheels and racing slicks for weekend events. Porsche really should have equipped the first 3-liter 930's with 15x9's and 15x8's as they are a perfect fit but there may have been issues meeting safety standards with tire chains and the increased expense/limited supply of the Carrera RS 3.0 Fuchs.

Thanks for sharing your trail-blazing thinking around the 3.0! I am going to just follow your example verbatim since you obviously have excellent taste. Ordering my 8/9 ASAP, wrapping with Toyos, putting the 7/8 on a shelf pending discovery of CN36s (the fronts are easy, right, it's the rears that are elusive...)

Yes, the CN36’s for the rears are very tough to find, either the 215’s or the 235/60/15’s. I’ve sent you a PM with some tips to fitting the 8 inch Fuchs to the fronts.

Photo of 1975 Porsche 930 Turbo, plate WN TU 3 in the February 1976 Christophorus magazine. This Turbo was one of 100 Porsches at the 19th international Ski Meet at Zürs on the Arlberg. European Turbos were much more likely to be driven in snow and rain conditions and this must have paid a heavy toll on the 1975 930’s due to the lack of galvanizing. According to Brain Long’s, "Porsche 911, The Definitive History, 1971 to 1977”, 43 percent of the first 1000 Turbos built remained in Germany.

An article on the Porsche 934 appeared in the April 1976 issue of Christophorus. The article mentions the close ties to the production Turbo: “On one hand the Turbo RSR is considerably more powerful than its predecessor, on the other it remains far closer to the production car and at a weight of 2470 lb. puts the heft of a fully-trimmed road car on the scales which promises spectacular sport. The Turbo RSR is based solidly in the production Turbo – raw body, engine and four-speed gearbox developed for the Turbo as well as the new rear suspension are standard based.” An interior photo nicely illustrates the 934's non-pleated door panels; based on the 1975 930 Turbos with leather bottom pockets and toggle switches for the electric window lifts that were still installed (bottom B&W image is my ’75 Turbo interior for comparison). The article mentions that Porsche had already homologated the 934 by the first of year.

Now that is nice. No wonder so many were retro modded from the dealer showroom ones to be more like the performance version. Must have been hard to order one new, even if you knew it was being built. Virtually unobtainable now.

The silver/lobster ’76 Turbo Carrera from Denver Colorado went to California - posted on, “Ferdinand - the Cult of Porsche”. The article also mentions that an Albert Blue Turbo Carrera sold for $155K.
