i agree my 79 is a great 930, but still the importance of the 3.0s being a homologation special is why i want one. the mcqueen 930 when it sold at auction for what was it about $150k is a steal compared to the his 73 S which old for over $1MM. here is the best shot of mine which is the also the same profile/shot of other's already posted.

My 77 930 was the same color, its official name was Viper Green Metallic

My car ended up going back to Germany when I sold it a year ago, still want another 930 someday.

not to hijack....but being a porsche guy in the '70s in the sf bay area [hung out at bob garretsons shop, complete with the abarth carrera in the rafters] i was a bit jaded to nasty p-cars...however the first time i saw a lp400..a real early one, black,.tall tires, no wings...it was truly the most otherworldly thing on wheels i had ever seen. the 930's were, and are, cool but as an employee of atari at the time almost every start-up ceo and team in sunnyvale had one...even now in the palo alto- woodside area it is hard to impress a local with an exotic car of any sort.......[btw.. the nite manager of a downtown eatery drives his one-owner 930 to work..not unusual around here.]

Im willing to bet that it is not an original un-restored 3 liter Turbo Carrera like this one below. Its likely a 3.3 liter 930 which was far more prolifically produced and therefore much more common.

This thread is about the 3 liter Turbo Carrera, 1975 to 1977.

so why or when did they move away from the "turbo carrera" script on the rear deck to the more common "turbo"?

    merry xmas all

I worked at PCNA in the mid-80's, and they still hated the early cars! The legal department spent more time on those lawsuits than on the dealer termination suits!

i believe the 75s actually had the "turbo" script but the 76-77s had the "turbo carrera" 2 piece script, then it went back to the "turbo" script from 78 on.

hey joe...best listen up to tritone...he did work for porsche north america and really was there when it happened...would show up at my house with the latest they had to offer..as i recall when he traveled [a lot] he was required to drive the newest model porsche had to offer at that location.he worked at a high level in the corporate media advertising area...he wasn't an ******* dealer,[ tho he had to work with them]...no slouch to porsches [and a design school buddy] we used to take joyrides in my 550...unfortunately he lost his way and somehow got involved with classic wood boats and ferraris...lots of them.

    I've owned a '76' '79. '86, and '87......
My opinion, the '79 is and was my personal favorite due to performance and race car feel, the '86 was the prettiest with the recessed lamps in front valance, while the '87 had the "ET" brake light ruining the rear aesthetics a little.
Overall the 930's are still up there as my favorite 'classic' exotic, just so easy to drive AND certainly fast enough for me :)

  19. What was the nature of the suits? Emissions, crash or?

Not that all this has anything to to with our love of these cars today 35 years later but:

Taken from The McClellan Law Firm:
Product Liability - Vehicle Speed & Power Defects
The McClellan Law Firm has litigated two cases against Porsche involving the Turbo 930, in which the combination of power, turbo-lag and oversteer made the vehicle too difficult to handle for the average driver, without proper warnings and instruction.
The first case, Garrison v. Porsche, arose out of the death of a husband and father who was a passenger in a Turbo 930, when the driver lost control on a city street and went into oncoming traffic. The jury awarded $2.5 million, which was upheld on appeal. The 1983 award tied the verdict for the death of Audie Murphy, a war hero and actor, for the largest wrongful death verdict in the state of California. Following the Garrison verdict, Porsche started offering driver's training to the purchasers of its high-performance, turbo-charged vehicles.
The second case, Trent v. Porsche, arose out of the death of a husband and father, when the Turbo 930 oversteered and collided with a telephone pole. The case settled for a confidential amount.

All the talk of Supercars that were crashed (by drivers who perhaps did not have the requisite driver skill, or prudent judgment to avoid disaster) is nothing new - its still going on today and you can always find a jury willing to blame the machine/manufacturer. Its hardly surprising that Porsche North America 'hated' the 930.

What does any of this have to do with our current appreciation & enthusiasm for the cars today? Absolutely zero.

If anything, it heightens it, because back in the day the car had a certain 'dangerous' reputation.

Today staying out of trouble when piloting a 930 Turbo Carrera requires nothing more than good common sense.
