Anyone here had both or compared both? I love them both and would love to here some comparisons. Which one handles better, which ones faster, Quicker, and brakes better? Any bad problems with either?
I have street dragged both on the street and in the mountains with a mildly modified 928. I think that if the boxter s may be better in all departments initially, but you can get a 944 turbo for 7-15k and with the difference in money, put in wheels, brakes, motor, suspension, etc... I have seen over 600hp 944 turbo's in porsche excellence magazine. and it's a sleeper, most people don't know what you have, 944's are old and things wear out though.
Had both...944 turbo more fun. Better construction, with turbo boost. Easy to mod. Can get a good one for 10k or so. Boxster s is ok - likely handles better, but you see them everywhere - not to mention they cost 3x more and are heavily depreciating....
Not really a fair comparison - the Boxster S is 3x the price of the 951 Porsche- a mint condition 944 Turbo can be had for $10k, with a $12k being on the expensive side... Like the rest of the guys said, the turbo'd engine allows for easier modifications and a potentially quicker car. Sick track car w/ the mods and a decent amount of parts laying around. Two completely different cars w/ two completely different prices ranges..
"Sick track car w/ the mods and a decent amount of parts laying around." I was in PCA for some years and saw some very nice 944 t's that were verrry fast on the track. 944 t's haven't depreciated much in the last 5 years and they probably won't in the next 5 years.
I can't make up my mind what I want. Im almost afraid to, because there is a lot of choises but once I buy, Then I have just the one, I guess I better make the right decision.
A nice 944 turbo is one of the most bang for buck cars out there. However, compared to a Boxster in my opinion it is quite ugly
Glad it's just your opinion My car is an S and just with a chip/boost/fuel pressure upgrade(cheap + reliable) I can easily pull away from a Boxter S on the straights, however they have a more modern sophisticated suspension setup and are probably a little quicker through the twisties. Throw a few bucks at the suspension of a 951 and it would be a different story, and you would have plenty money left over for tires and track time
How much would a new higher-performance suspension be on either a 944 or 951? Would the extra $$ for the 951 be worth it? 944 is my ideal car right now if I can raise the money, problem is I probably can't afford a 951 but maybe I can get my dad to pick up some slack. Doesn't a 16 year old with a 400whp Porsche sound like a great idea?
I do love the 951 But a guy once told me, "When you can remove a crisp $100 bill from you wallet and tourch it without flinching you ready to own a 951."
Not an issue if you buy a good car, lots of poorly maintained/thrashed ones out there though so beware. What looks like a good deal can become a project, however there are lots of used and aftermarket parts to be had.
that's a nice black turbo. there is more room in a 944 than a boxter, I am 6'2" and fit better in a 944. koni hyper coil suspension internal/external adjustable ~4k will make it handle better than a boxter. you can get the wheels that are on the black turbo for 1K, or 1500 for tires and wheels. so for ~5-6k, it will handle better than a boxter s. so for about 15-17k you can get a 944 t that will kill a 911, and give most exotics a run for the money.
I have no doubt a 944 can be setup to "handle" better than a Boxster, but is that purely in a teeth-wrattling stiff track sense, or can they be setup to handle equally well on the track and the (not always perfect) street? I do not claim to know the answer, and am genuinely curious. I have not spent much seat time in 944s. I do know the Boxster is incredibly neutral and flingable and balanced, track or street. But it certainly is limited in upgrade potential unless you change out the engine and costs a heck of a lot more. Although...what does a 2.5 with miles go for now? I bet it isn't north of $20k by much, if at all.
Completely different cars. my 944 turbo pumps out about 450hp and on the track it holds its own with GT2s, Turbos, GT3s and other very fast race cars, but then again it has a lot of work aside from the hp done to it. Out of the box there is no question that the boxster S is more car, take a look at the gap in years and the price difference. A 951 will cost you 10kish for a decent one while a boxster S new is over 50k and used will probably be in the 35-40k range for a nice example. That being said you can buy a used no-S boxster and a 951 for the price of a used boxster S. If you are going to Mod just a chip alone will make the 951 crush and I mean crush the boxster. But you wont have the newer car feel. I guess it depends on what you want out of the car.
How durable are chipped 944Ts? Do the engines last? It is hard to believe internals built to survive at a given HP will survive long with vastly upgraded HP. Were the 944Ts engines overdesigned enough to take the extra grunt? Do the tranny's have to be upgraded as well? (I am assuming "yes"...) Curious.
