Hey Guys, I just went to get my NY State emission renewed and the car failed due to excessive HC (2.13 but the limit was 1.8). Would this diagnostic post sill apply to a '95 355? http://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/showthread.php?t=103466&highlight=emission&page=2 The car did have its battery disconnected shortly before the test and unfortunately I forgot to let it idle for 10 minutes to learn all of it's ECU settings. Could this be the cause? The exhaust does smell of fuel even after I did the 10 minute idle procedure so Im not sure it's that simple or by driving it without the 10 minute idle I fouled the plugs. Do i need to give it a good drive to get it back in spec? Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks!
My bet is that one or both of your cats are burned out. You will also want to check the resistance on your mass air flows sensors, they need to be at 383 ohm's.
Same results happened on my test as well. I have the same year as yours. It's the cats & they are not cheap. Sucks. My cats failed because too much heat coming from the faulty manifolds. The heat from the manifolds reduced the element inside the cats to size of cigars! Chances are you need ur manifolds looked at too.
I will check the MAF ohm's first but Is there a way to evaluate if the cat's are burned out? I know one was replaced in '04 so i'm assuming the other one is the culprit but would rather know for sure before buying/installing the replacement.
A temperature infrared gun could do the trick. Run the car for 10min. Point the gun at each cat & see if there is a temp difference. Then point the gun at the manifold connection to the cat & then at the rear connection of the cat. If the temp difference is over 200 degrees hotter out the back of the cat then ur running rich & could be ruining the element in the cat.
Nope. You would get a "slow down" light if the cats were over heating. When you put the key in the ignition, then turn it to the on position with out starting the engine, do all the lights on the instrument panel come on? In particular the "slow down 1/4", and "slow down 5/8" lights. The reason I ask is because, people have been know to remove the bulbs.
Yes, all bulbs are present and haven't even had a transient slow down issue. The hyper-flows from ricambi are already on the way. I'll check that MAF's while i'm at it but figured replacing the cats might prolong the life of my headers anyway. Thanks for all the help.
