    Hi,
wanted to check with any of you on a 968?

My mate wants to get it and was asking me if i knew anything about it.

Any issues with this car or its engine? It has around 10,000miles.
or anything to watch out for.

    Thanks in advance

seems unusual for a porsche of that age to only have 10K miles... get a PPI and see if wear and tear is c/w 10K miles...

has the car been sitting for a long period?

PPI 100% required in this car...

    Agree on everthing and if the car checks out, your friend may want to buy it. They are somewhat rare and I love the look and ease of the car. I only found a pair of 968's worth buying in my city and neither owner would sell {Porsche guy's *rolls eyes* nearly half as bad as those Ferrari guys}

Great cars........I sold them back when they were new.

Known problems are few and basically with 10K miles (if genuine) you'll have a lot of trouble free driving ahead.

Down the road (60K+ miles) expect the differential to have issues and expensive repairs.......other than that.....the usual water pumps, timing belts, tensioners, head gaskets, shocks, etc are just as routine as 944's were in terms of maintenance.

LOVE the 968 cabs...would love to add one to my collection some day. As noted great cars, just be sure and get all the hoses and belts replaced if they have not been done in the last 5 years...peace of mind and all! I recently bought an '82 928 with 3500 miles on it! YEA 3500! The car is BRAND NEW! We put new belts and hoses on the thing and it runs like a top... Drained all the fluids of course too...

Good luck and post some pics when you can!

Thanks for all the replies guys.

Yes this is a genuine miles on the car, as the previous owner was the 1st owner and has the car new since 1993 and he has a fleet of cars.

My friend is also looking at a 964 carerra and was wondering which would be a better drive.

He was asking me for my opinion and I said, go for a 993 or just get the 968 as I dont like te 964.

    What would you guys choose?

I had a 1993 968 coupe red/tan. Fantastic car! Great looking, somewhat rare, and well built. A very neat car to own, I wish I still had mine. I say tell your friend to go for it.

The 968 may not be "better" than the 993, but it is probably a lot scarcer, as 88Mondial says. I drove a white/blue cab when they were newer, but it was a Tiptronic and not all that exciting to drive due the tranny. I would probably buy the six-speed 968, knowing that I could always sell it later and pick up a 993.

Except for the 3.6 Turbo, I would stay away from the 964s. My brother had one and by Porsche standards it was a fairly needy car.

for 968 with 6 speeds check for the rear pinion bearing failures. This is the same tranny used in Audi's and apparently they were covered under warranty by audi but not by porsche. There was too much preload on the bearings i think and this will cause failure. What you will hear from the tranny is something like a high pitch whine almost like a plane taking off (i never heard of this though in my car, but it never did have that problem). You can check out www.rennlist.org or www.968.net (dont know if the discussion forums are still up there as it's been several years since i trolled there).
The car itself is very well balanced, the brakes i still prefer the feel of the 911's (pre 996's) as they feel like a brick wall.

Another thing to look out for is the seal on the rear hatch between the glass and the metal as it is a huge piece of glass (by today standards) and if the seal is all dried out and you slam the hatch shut you could shatter it.

Best of luck, the 968 is a rarity and is a pleasure to drive, try to look for one that's fitted with sport suspensio, M030 brakes, sport seats (has big ass side bolsters), and a six speed!

    Enjoy and happy hunting!

Great car, quite rare by Porsche standard-under 2500 cabs came to the US over the four years they were sold here. I've got one of ten speed yellow cabs, and there were ten speed yellow coupes. We have a 968 owner (the only mint green cab for the US) who is almost finishing collating every coupe and cab sold, VIN numbers, interior/exterior color, and options.

And as far as the pinion bearing problem, it's not mileage related. Some cars have the problem, but it seems to have affected less than twenty percent of the cars.

I'll take a coupe in black or yellow. At its birth it had the highest output 4-5 cyl engine.

Me too, always liked the look of the coupe. And I think the 968 has aged a bit better than a 944 aesthetically. Too bad the U.S. never got the turbo version.

does the convertible have the fiberglass "cap" over the trunk area like the 944 convertible, or is it a more integrated, metal piece? hard to tell from the pics...

I like 968 cabs. The nose might be shorter, but you can see some resemblance in shape... (if they ever did a 928 cab... it would have been closer!)

I agree. The cab did away with the hatchback styling that never quite worked. I've never though 911 cabs worked all that well, but 968 cab is pseudo-classic.

It's composite, not fiberglass. And the reversing lights change to white when you engage reverse, it's really cool. And I have a Bumperplug keyhole cover in body color that cleans up the look, as well as a full 200 cell cat Cargraphic exhaust which also has a better and larger exhaust tip to clean it up a bit.
