I am looking to buy a 1999 F355 F1. It has 18 thousand miles on it and what is scaring me is oil on the top back of both heads. I have not looked at the service records yet. Can anyone tell me if this is common or what might be wrong with this car? Do you know where I would get a PPI in the Central Iowa region? Can anyone tell me if it is safe to powerwash the engine on this model? Please help, Ray

That might be your cam seals, yes its a common problem. Its not worth power washing your engine. there are to many electrical connections under there. It may be something you live to regret when you cant source the inevitable problem IMO. Hand clean the engine with a degreaser.

Leaking cam seals are common, and should be fixed at each and every major service.

While the engine is out of the car, you can clean anything in there to our hearts content--without resorting to anything more powerful than a toothbrush, and orange blast/simple green/whatever.

Since this is 2009, this car should have already had two major services, one about 5 years ago, and one this year--or you will be looking to do it as part of the buying process--assuming you are smart and want the car to run properly for a long time......

Open up the air filter boxes. Do you see any dark oil on the paper air filters? That would hint at an engine oil overfill.

Rub your finger on the half-axles that go from the tranny to the wheels. Any black oil there? That would suggest a possible cracked rubber boot.

Snap a picture of the oil and post it here.
