    Hello all,
I have an issue with a rattle in the steering column on my 99 360. I just replaced all front ball joints and verified that all tie rods/ends are good. I kind of figured the sound i was hearing was coming from a bad ball joint. Even though all ball joints had play in them, it did not appear that it was bad enough to have this rattle traveling all the way up to the steering column. I noticed that the columns were redesigned sometime in the 2000 model year to include a tapered nut where the upper column shaft and lower column shaft spline together. Ive seen videos of people tightening those nut to take care of column rattle. I figure the 99s may be prone to these vibration/rattles thats why they made an engineering change to the column design. I was thinking about buying a used 2000+ column and putting it in to hopefully solve my problem. Anyone else wih a 99 have this issue?
    Thanks,
    Scott

I think you are describing an uncommon problem. Are you able to lift your front end with the wheels hanging free, like on jackstands or a lift? I think if you did this and removed the under panel you should be able to pull on stuff until you find the issue.

    99 euro here. No issue.

when I had "rattle" or clatter in the front years back it was the anti-roll bar tie rods that were loose.

It's not clear what you are describing!

Are you describing physical rattle or a noise? These steering column clam shells are crappy plastic. Could you have pieces rattling around inside the plastic clam shell or is it something different?

I had a noise that sounded like nails being shaken around in a metal bucket when I hit a bump but that ended up being due to all of my ball joints being bad.
