Having a PPI on a 99 550. Opinions on replacement costs. Rear black window frame pieces delaminating Needs new engine mounts, upgrade to 575 Windshield has chip, cost of ferrari windscreen replacement. Mismatched tires, would probably go with Michelins Interior good, few sticky knobs. Rear side windows rubber shrinkage Little if any shrinkage of leather in the interior Needs hoses replaced. Main center seamed hose still in place and would also want to replace the two back hoses under the firewall. Braided hose to oil cooler dripping, may either need tightening or replacing. Another small oil drip that appears to be coming from the A/C pump area. Underneath looks good, some scrapes on the front spoiler. No rubber/tar underneath so I believe that the car was never tracked. a chip on the front bumper and a scratch on the rear bumper. If the car is purchased aside from the above fixes, suggestions besides 575 upgrade to cam bearings and belts, full fluid and filter changes? Isn't there a by-pass valve for the engine pressure that is an upgrade? Thank you for any suggestions.
Sounds like a $65k car that needs $5-6k of work to keep it a driver. Pretty average for a 550. You can dump like 25-30 in and make it very nice but it would be easier to just buy a better 550. Then you won't drive it anywhere because you worry the bird droppings will ruin the paint. That's just a waste.
Steven- She undoubtedly has the new belts already and 99s already have the same tensioner bracket as the 575M/612 and the tensioner bearings have been identical for the 456-612 run. Just need to line her up with the 5 year belt change cycle. New windscreen is $2160 from Ricambi, plus labor. Have chip filled? Hard to see damage afterwards. 575M engine mounts $382 each (2) plus considerable labor because driver's side is a pain to change. Michelin PSS does not have size for rear of 550/575M with 18" wheels. PS2s still available, or Continentals. Check TireRack for more info. Rear window molding $682 and gasket $218-264 depending on assembly number. Like FBB said, a bit of work to get her where you want her, but basically sounds like a good car. Did they do a leak-down check?
yes, leak dopwn check was being done when I stopped by the shop, but left before they finished. Waiting on final inspection report. As to Fatbillybob, I have not seen a low mileage 550 in that price range. Most that I have seen, depending of mileage in the $75-$85K range. Car does not have the leather on the rear shelf nor the handling package although it does have Tubi cans. It does have the spare tire option with all the tools and books. Silvery blue with a red gut.
Those are usually stripped and repainted. That's what was happening to my 550 all over when I bought it. I had the peeling paint stripped off all window moldings and left them bare. I think they look better that way and I never have to worry about the paint peeling again. I don't know why Ferrari painted the window moldings in the first place. There's nice flat black trim under that paint!
Thank you for you insight. The shop was doing a leak-down check when I visited the shop, but left before they were done. As to Fatbillybob's price range, I have not seen a nice low mileage 550 at that price, most have been in the $75-89K range. This car is a silvery blueish gray with a red gut. Does not have the handling package nor the leather rear shelf. It does have Tubi cans and have all the books and tools along with the spare tire option.
Yes steve the values are all over the map due to condition. Your description does not tell the whole story and you could indeed have a $75-85K car. You gave sketchy description I gave sketchy answer. That's how these threads go. Someone posts limited info gets limited response that turns out way out of line as more info trickles in for the OP. The range on these cars seems to be $60-95k depending on year and condition and options. While all years the same the later models command a premium just because they are newer and likely partly due to likely lower miles. You would rather have a 20k mile 2001 car than a 20k mile 1997 car because a car not driven needs just as much mechanical maintenance as a car that is driven. One of the rarest options seems to be the spare tire. I have seen very few. The tire is useless but it was an option that adds value. For your future tires I'm a big fan of the conti dw's and runflats if they come in maranello sizes. I know what people think but for street driving they are very adequate and if you want to go bombing around or do a trackday R888's on a second pair of wheels is a great way to go. New sets of 550 wheels for the short run are under $1500 a set!
Thank you. Car is priced just under $80 16k miles. 2nd owner. Waiting on PPI to decide on purchase subject to pricing of needs.

I've never run into tar on the track, fortunately. I do get tons of rubber stuck to my wheels, but that washes off. The best way to know if a car has been tracked is to look for it on YouTube or pictures of it with numbers on the side. When I bought my car, the way I found out it had been tracked was through the service records. FNB listed what it called a "Track Service." Basically it consisted of changing the fluids and inspecting tires and brakes. The prior owner had my car serviced at the dealer every time he tracked the car. I'll echo what others have said, but add that I would look out for leaks in the fuel tank. A car that has been sitting as much as this one would be a suspect, IMO. It might not smell now because it hasn't had the gas sloshing around in the tank, but once you get it out on the road you smell gas. Aside from that, I would budget $7,500 to take care of all the stuff this car needs. Do everything now and then just enjoy driving the car for many years. Make sure to check the valve timing. Some have been known to leave the factory with the timing off. Change all three hoses, not just the big one. Dave Helms' Scuderia Rampante hoses would be my recommendation. With respect to the tires, if they aren't more than five years-old, I'd just wear them out having fun and then buy a full set of whatever suits you.
Windshield is going to run you $3500. That's what it cost me, since you also have to replace the window trim/rubber. It's almost impossible to remove without destroying it.
Well, the owner of the car only has one black fob and two keys, no red fob! No code for radio either. Could be a deal breaker. Any idea as to pricing of alarm and new fobs? Would a Ferrari dealer be able to look up the radio code? Thank you.
Not a deal breaker unless you need to be Ferrari perfect. If that was the case you would not use upgraded Hill eng products or SRI products because they are not Ferrari. If there is no pin the red FOB is useless other than being an FOB. You can clone any number of FOBs and have all you will ever need for that car. You can even buy red covers to cover a fob and have a red one if you must. You want to look OEM you clone and go 2 blacks one red just no PIN. Functionally you have everything except the PIN to start the car if you don't have the FOB. But without doing some homework if you are the random owner I defy you to start your car with the PIN right now. The process is difficult and cryptic such that dozens of threads have been written about it and TAZ has become our go to guy to dispel untruths and provide legitimate information.
Price out the cost of a new gasket around the windshield. Last time I looked it was thousands of dollars for the darn gasket. More than the glass. Experts...can you reuse the old gasket? Scott
I'm no expert but I was told by several that you can not reuse that gasket. I had to buy a new one. Total cost for a new windshield installed was over $6,000. Insurance paid all but $100.00
You'll have to get a new mirror too. There are no more 550 windshields and the 550 mirror won't fit the 575M windshield mount. Are you sure the windshield has to be replaced? It's just a chip.
That may be a blessing in disguise, I had mine replaced with a 575 windshield, hated the 575 mirror but then found that the 599 electrochromatic mirror fits that mount. A simple wiring job and now I have auto dimming.
Steven- Radio code is no big deal. We have contacts who will give it to you for free. All they need is the serial number on the back of the unit and it is easy to remove. For the alarm, FBB is correct, you can clone the fob you have and then swap fobs frequently so the rolling codes do not get too far out of synch (I would do it every other drive). Document I wrote is attached and has fob details. FBB- Starting with the PIN only is actually pretty easy and takes about 3 minutes once you figure out what you are doing. That is why I wrote a checklist on how to do it. Everybody I sent fob sets to got them to work and the procedures start with the same steps. Image Unavailable, Please Login
Well for me personally I just about guarantee that my old brain will forget my PIN in time of need. Then I won't be able to find the instructions on how to use the pin swearing it must be in the glovebox. Of course I will be pissed because my FOB does not work and that right there will be the kiss of death to any reasoning that would come from the left side of my brain. The best option for a dead FOB is to head to the nearest bar for a shot of memory enhancer.
