The question seems pretty one sided.

    Should be something like
    A4 vs 330

S4 vs M3 maybe (I'm not totally in tune with the S4 spec sheet).

    Anywho, M3 for the win.

M3, and i drive a 98 A4...And even if it were S4 vs. M3 i still might go M3. But, id have to get some more seat time in an S4 before i made that call. S4 definitely is much easier to tune than an M3.

The S4 is much more costly though :(. I have a 2.7tt in my A6. If you want to swap turbos, you need to pull the engine. A dealer will quote between 6-7k. Honestly, I don't have much faith in the 2.7tt. It is a very noisey engine with several quirks; VERY fun though!

I'm with Luke... I'm an Audi guy...but have never really warmed to the A4... and while I'd love to have a V8 S4, I'd likely take an M3 over anything less.

I happen to think the late E36 M3 is a "best buy" right now... in fact I recently bought a '98 M3 'vert. Very nice car for under $20k...

99M3 over A4 hands down..no brainer. I wouldn't pick the S4 with stock turbo over an M3, but the getting more power out of the S4 is easier than an M3.

M3 is a much more complete package. More durable, handles better,a has a better resale.

    Here, a later E36 M3 ('97, '98) would set you back AUD $60,000...

Or roughly the same as what it costs to buy a new E90 320i.

my wife drives a 98.5 A4 2.8 QMS . she loves it to pieces (so much i haven't been able to replace it), but it's a maintenance annoyance. wheel bearings. it eats brakes. oil leaks. yadda yadda yadda. it is STELLAR in the snow, but i don't know that i'd buy another audi.

but as omar indicated, if you have to drive it in inclement weather, the M3 is not a great option.

    M3.

Unless you're driving it in the snow, then I'd consider an s4.

    I've owned an E36 M3 and a B5 S4. They're close. M3 vs. A4 though -- no question about it.

2000 S4 (S4 did not come out until 2000). The B5 S4 and the E36 M3 are pretty close to each other in performance. As for which is better, depends on your preference and needs.

I have a 2001 S4 and my brother a 2001 A6 2.7T, with a simple ECU upgrade you will be making 300+ hp and 350+ torque. The 2.7 V6 engines are proven, the turbos can be troublesome, depending on upkeep and the level of abuse it took while under previous ownership. However, if the K03s (OEM) does blow, you can upgrade into K04s (OEM RS4) for the same price of replacing the K03s. You will be looking at 350+ hp and 380+ torque easily with extrem reliability. With the S4, the untapped potential is there to be released, safely. With the E36, there isn't much you can do unless you are shelling out $10,000+ or so on a turbo or supercharger kit. Even aftermarket downpipes are hellish expensive. A good Audi site to do some research on is www.audiworld.com

Plus, the Audi is usable in all weather and seasons with high performance all-season tyres. The M3 will be better for the track events, but useless in winter unless you have snow tyres.

If you are looking for litertures for reference that compared the sports sedans of that time, check Car and Driver 09/1999 issue for a comparison between the B5 S4, e36 M3, Saab 9-3 Viggen and the MB C43 AMG.

Good luck and have fun in your search.

Thanks, I was leaning more toward the M3 because I've driven one, and it did handle pretty darn good.

And I have driven an A4 and I liked it very much also.

I live in Houston, where 80 is a cool day, so the snow is out.

I think the vote is in...M3.
