Is this right? Or totally blown out of proportion? Do I still want a 355? "THE 15K MILE SERVICE WAS DONE, AND THE PREVIOUS OWNER SPENT $9900.00 DOING IT" Image Unavailable, Please Login
Depends totally on what was done to the car! The engine out belt service alone shouldn't cost that at all.
Thats right May have done belts, clutch, brake pads ect.........ect....... You never know what they did for $9K Although for $9K, you would wanna hope they did alot of work to the car
Depends on the dealer too. There are certainly certified dealers that are happy to take a large chunk of your money. and yes, you still want a 355!
Ask for a copy of his bill and permission to talk to the dealer about the service work and condition of his 355.
Not unlikely at all. I'm spending considerably more than that on my 456 right now. Let's see, in addition to belts, tensioners, hoses (can start getting expensive fast), brakes, tires, water pump rebuild, various plastic covers on my car were broken, etc. etc. etc. Remember, these cars are getting to around 10 years old, which is a time where many of the rubber components are starting to get hard and will need to be replaced. Also remember that on any Ferrari, from the lowliest Mondial 8 on up, it's easily possible to spend $10k or more on maintenance and repairs. If you're not prepared to spend that sort of money once in a while, I would pass or get a newer one which is still in warranty. The good news is that it sounds like this one has already had lots of work done to it. Maybe many of those things were already replaced.
9 k on a 355 is not unheard of at all. Lets see.If it was an engine out service because of age..9k could include tires (rears anyway) tensioner bearings $1000 and up for the pair, maybe the owner decided to repaint the front bumper becuase of stone chips, could have had some other issues he wanted fixed, like a couple of electrical issues etc...next thing you know..9k...
For that much money it sounds like he had an engine out major done and maybe even the clutch. It's hard to say without knowing what was done for sure.
Mine had cost $11,000+. Needed new cats among other things. Also, lets not foget the famous F1 pump repair (replacement). This can cost $16,000 (not a typo) plus labor! Tim
FYI, it is the 30K service that calls for timing belt replacement, not a 15K (unless your past the time interval). In any case, yes if it were an engine out 30K service then $10,000 is feasable.
The f355 will go down in history as the most expensive modern Ferrari period. The service on these can be off the charts when they start finding things wrong. This invoice could have been just an engine out and clutch easy.I learned that you need to be brave with these cars!!!!The invoices will come and will be large...I guess just depends on how bad you like the car....They do make the best noise with Tubi and test pipes I have ever heard from a Ferrari....
Even though it only has 15k on it, it's over 5 yrs old so the belts do require a change. 10k is pretty easy to do as already stated. Sounds like the perfect time to buy. It's ready to roll. Darrell.
I will agree that it is entirely possible. I have receipts from the prior owner totalling over $30k with a single invoice at $23k. Everything but the badges were upgraded. I have put about $10k in my car since owning it for only a few months. It is a lot of cash to lay out, but I am confident that my car is sorted out well. Of course, I have also learned through the years that 'if it aint broke, fix it anyway'. Ounce of prevention? Cliche me.
I looked at a 355F1 Fiorano that had a phonebook (albeit from a small town)sized repair bill binder. The catalysts alone were about $10k! I remember my first major on a TR, I got the "while we're in there" call and next thing you know....$$$$$!! It's got to make you feel REALLY good when you drive the car or it will be a short relationship.
The only place I've seen service invoices publicly posted for a F355 is here: http://www.nsxfiles.com/f355/ It's a '99 F355 as well. The $ start to add up quickly as you can see.
But realistically, shouldn't most owners be able to manage at least basic maintenance on their own cars? If you take any ferrari/porsche/etc to the dealer for EVERYTHING, you will soon spend 20% of the value of the car... Just doing your own fluid changes would save you 1000-2000 a year, and you could use that money for the ferrari mechanic when you really need it . Over 5 years you have 10k$ sitting there waiting for something to break...
That always seems to be my intent but life and work seem to get in the way of basic maintenance duties. Also, when small parts like seat ECUs can cost a thousand dollars, the liability of doing your own work incorrectly can far surpass the savings of taking the car to a trained tech.
