I saw an 85K Black on Black Carrera 2 in North Hollywood (California) at Pacific Auto Group on Lankershim and wondered if anyone had the story on this car.

As I am no expert it looked like a few non original parts but seemed reasonable at 24K but in the absense of the story the carfax looked clean but I wanted to get a PPI as the purchase price is nothing given what can go wrong in terms of cost...any ideas on a good PPI ?

You might want to register/post on www.rennlist.com. Those guys know everyone who ever did more than change the oil on these cars.

If Rusnak or whatever the closest dealer is will do a PPI, that's not a bad way to go. These cars are still new enough that dealer techs know what they're doing. (I had my 993 serviced at Pioneer Porsche in San Diego.)

One thing that I am really not sure they can actually PPI for is the valve guide issue. It shows up usually as a check engine light, code being the MAP - but it can usually be reset several times before it starts happening often enough to force you to do essentially a top overhaul. Interestingly, I had to do mine right at 85K...

85K is also just about clutch time if it has not already been done. Here again, did not notice anything until it just started slipping, and unfortunately this happened AFTER we did the engine out for the overhaul.

The other big expense we have had was the AC coil under the dash started leaking around 90K and you have to go in from the front, pulling the fuel tank out, to get at it. This could also be tricky because you can charge it up and it will go a few weeks (cooling pretty much normally) if it is not leaking real bad.

The above could add up to around 10K or more on a 23K car...

105K now on the '96 and all is well.
