I'm sorry, but I am from the old school where we believe all Porsches or more specifically 911s are air cooled. Obviously with new technology, the newer cars are better, but I think the 993 is the last of the real deal. The look, the doors that go "clink" and the fan sound when one drives by. Thoughts?

Disagree. The Germans are engineering freaks. Air cooled or not the newer 911's and Caymans and even the Cayennes are Porsches.

Case in point, I think the 959 was partially water cooled, nobody said it wasn't a Pcar.

    I'm an aircooled fan but I wouldn't turn away a new GT3....

    Besides 964s and 993s have p/s...everyone knows real Porsches ain't got p/s!!!! ;)

In answer to the OP's question......YES....but only if it pertains to the 911 model. The 911 generations that followed the 993 are bloated, heavy, and filled with all kinds of idiotic electrical crap that makes them almost Lexus like.

Having said that........the Carrera GT is most definitely a real Porsche, as is a properly optioned Boxster S.

just personal preference, but I think the later model 996 was the best 911 design. Looked very modern, all the curves fit in together smoothly, and I love the headlights. Especially the 996 Turbos... http://www.midwestscc.com/viewphoto.php?id=2502

Were many of the famous race cars air cooled? I am not much of an expert on them, but the 962/956, 917, 935s?
I grew up racing motorcycles, and when the switch to water cooling was made, power and reliability went way up. My wife's 1930 Ford model A is water cooled...and so is her dad's 1915 model T.

    ^ Nope. 996 GT2 and 3.
Gonna get me a 996 GT2 after they come down a bit more. Perhaps 1 more year before they stabilize.

to me...the 993 is the last true porsche...but that is just my opinion. i have had an aircooled 911 or 930 since i was 22 yrs old. i cannot imagine my garage w/o one.

i currently am on my 3rd 930 turbo. i have finally figured out that selling it would only leave me scratching my head...what the hell does one get to replace it? only another 930 would suffice. my current 930 has approx 500 hp...old 930's never die...they just go back to the shop for more hp!!!!

I smile more when I see a 993 Turbo on the road, than I would if I saw a 996/ 997 Turbo. But I love all generations. The new ones are good in their own way.

The new cars lack character, but 997 Carrera 2 is very beautifully shaped.

    The last true Porsche?
I guess the company themselves don't make their own cars anymore.
Come on, There all Porsche's, I would take a Carrera GT over any air cooled Porsche.
Then I would take a 1973 Carrera RS.

I drove the new 997 with PDK last week. The technology is amazing and it is far superior to the 993 all the way around, power, ect. But when I got back in my 993 later in the night, I was even more happy to own a 993. I love that classic sports car feel, with modern suspension, decent power, and no driving aids. My car does have track mods.

    what's less than 2500 pounds?
not a 993, unless you completely gut it, like everything!
Even a 964 RS America is over 2500.

I know I'm not, but earlier cars are pretty archaic compared to modern sports cars and even 993s.
