Hi all, first time posting here. I have a problem with my 996's tip tronic shifter lever. Over a period of 6 months or so the lever got sticky and now to the point where I almost can't shift the lever from P to D. When engine is hot, it's virtually impossible to move. I have to switch off engine wait for it to cool and then move the lever back to P.

Any ideas what's going on? Thanks

Yep........get the shifter cable adjusted first........and if that does not work, it's "probably" the internals on the one piece non-repairable Tiptronic shifter mechanism which are broken.

It's a common fault. It cost me $1,800 to replace it ($1,500 for the part plus 2 hours labor) and it was a "dealer only" part as of 2 years ago.......I did it on 2 different cars FWIW........my dealer service writer told me what it was before the car every went into the shop.

Thanks Kds, you don't by any chance have the part number? :)

The Porsche dealer here is not much help.

Sorry I don't.............I've had this problem on 4 cars now, and in all cases, it was one of the two repairs I described that fixed it. But that does not mean it could potentially be something else as well.

    Good luck !!

No worries your input is way better than what I got from the dealer who just wants to escalate my issues to fleece me....

Mine did something similar and I couldnt get it out of park. I took the top button off the knob and reset the spring and it worked fine.

Is the button sitting up like it should?

try renntech, rennlist, and 6speed online- 3 pretty good porsche forums.

    I'd start with rennlist :)

Pelican Forums is also pretty good for the DIY'er, or so I'm told...I fix stuff until it's broken :(
