I was wondering, (not trying to start a war here), why someone would buy the Elise, when for the same, (or close to), you could buy a nice used 996. It just seems the Porsche is a lot more car.
Is it the used car issue?
    How about the driving experience?
Is it the "exotic" allure of the Lotus?
Is it a matter of looks?
Not trying to start a flame war, but I just wanted some experienced opinions..............

Why buy a Ferrari when you can get a Mercedes SL55?

Exotic looks, the Lotus brand, but mostly it is a really REALLY awesome car to drive.

I'd pick the 996 over the Lotus for these reasons:
    a great winter beater
    German engineering for winter reliability
    German steel "don't" rust. ;)

Elise is like a gokart , but 996 is prestigious sport car. It just depends from a costumer.

I'd take the Lotus. And I'm a died in the wool Porsche guy. But I live in sunny southern california where it only rains twice a year and snow is unheard of.

2 different cars; based upon the real world driving conditions in the NYC metropolitan area, 996 is the rationale choice. On glass smooth roads in warm weather areas, then I'd give the Lotus a long hard look....

While both cars are technically sports cars, they're really not the same thing.

The P car is worlds more refined, heavier, and comfortable. It's quick, handles well and has unbelievable brakes but it's a tank compared to the Elise.

I wouldn't own an Elise unless it was a third car because I found it simply impossible to get in and out with the roof panel in place but it's one bad ass go kart for the streets. It handles like a dream and feels more connected to the road than damn near anything out there at any price. But you wouldn't want to drive to Santa Barbara in one.
