I didn't put a build thread here, but here is the final product. If you want to check out the build I went into further detail here: 996ls1.blogspot.com

    Quick rundown:
    '99 911 with an LS1 (chevy V8)
    996 turbo (widebody) wheels
    daily driver
built by myself over the winter

Awesome! Do you have any performance numbers? Must be an animal.

Looks like the V8 fits in there fairly well.

Curious, did you have to modify the rear seat area or was there enough room without doing that?

The only modification to the car was removing some sheet metal at the back of the engine bay. Nothing was changed in the back seat.

Basically a stock '01 LS1 with exhaust/intake, no A/C or PS; so around 350hp/350tq at crank. Weighs in around 2800lbs.

Is it more tail-heavy than a stock 996?

Have you taken it on a skidpad or perhaps through some safe corners (lots of run-off area) at a fast enough speed to feel the difference?

I bet that low-end torque feels massive off the line in your car. :)

The LS1 weighs less than the OEM 996 engine IIRC

Thanks for the link to the blogm, I'll look at it in more detail later as I've always been interested in doing a project like this.

BTW, blog says the car is for sale. Why now after all this work?

I had a '99 ACR a few years ago and sold it. Since then I've always regretted the sale. The 996 was on my "must own" list and the LS1 swap was also on that list so I bought the 911 for a DD. The other day when I was walking home from the office a Viper drove by and literally stopped me in my tracks. At that point I knew that it was time to get back into a Viper, but in order for that to happen the 911 must go.
I put a TON of time and money into this swap, so the sale isn't the smartest move, but the irrational part of my brain is controlling this decision. lol

I'm not sure if the weight bias changed to make the car more tail heavy. But the car dropped weight going to the LS1, I also removed a lot of things off the back of the car (air pump, heat shields, some sheet metal, Fabspeed mufflers & stock crossover, and bumperettes). The fender gap between the rear fender and tire was massive before I put coilovers on.

The torque is very nice with the LS1. I can drive around at 1000rpm. lol

stock 996 gearbox? did you upgrade any of the internals? stock diff or LSD?

btw looks like a great build. and yes a lot of room under a 996 when you get rid of the stock cats/mufflers/heat shielding ;)

Does the rear wing need to stay in the up position?

Up in all your pics... looks tight under the top.

The rear wing is manual now. I leave it up, but to lower it there are two screws that have to be removed and the accordion has to be taken out (a few clips hold it in place).

Yeah, stock gearbox. They have held up to higher power levels than what I ever anticipated.
It leaves 11's, so LSD. :D

There really is a lot of room with the exception of the top of the engine, intake manifold to top of engine bay is tight.

Did you remove the two blocks on the rear bumper or is it just a Euro-spec?

    this.

I removed the two blocks (bumperettes) from the bumper cover, and had to drill out the metal mounts on the bumper beam. Then I used some sheets of carbon fiber to cover the holes.

here's the carbon bumperette delete plates
    LS1 into 996: Annnnnnnd we're back!

Bumperettes removed from bumper beam after drilling out the pop rivets. That shaved over 10lbs off the very back of the car.

Cant wait to see what you do with a viper. I followed the build tread for the 911 over on stanceworks.

Yeah. I have my eyes on a Viper.

I still keep playing with the 996 though. Just installed new 8.5mm spark plug wires and set up an appointment to install LS7 manifolds, downpipes, and build a new exhaust.

Hopefully you'll find a better looking solution... cover the entire license depression with CF?

Still looks better than the bumperettes. That area does need to be claybar'ed and it would look much better.

Some people plasti-weld plastic in the holes and then sand & paint to look like the euro bumpers. It's by far the best looking option and the most expensive/time intensive.

Others just run a euro plate behind the US plate, which covers the holes.

Some states allow euro-plates with your state license plate number, state, stickers on them, I've been told.
