I have been thinking about a potential Xmas gift to myself and have been reading about the GT3 as a stall mate for my 360CS (track car). However, what I thought would be an easy decision has been derailed by the 996GT2. I am strangely drawn to the petulant nature of the car and wild bronco reputation (never driven one though). Since I biasly think that the 360CS' surgical handling is hard to top, I would probably limit the track duty of the GT2. Has anyone gone through a similar thought process? Any insight?

The 997 interior is nicer, if that matters. Both are similar performance wise. One is NA the other turbocharged. Personally i think the 997 is the prettier car, but the GT2 is awesome. The only problem I see with the GT2 is the 996 turbo. A VERY similar car and much less $. (major difference being 4wd vs 2)

Both cars will satisfy a track based itch and both are rear wheel drive. Not a bad dilemma to have.

tough one. If you plan to leave them stock, then I think the newer car is better and no doubt the 997 is better looking in & out.

But the 996GT2 can be an absolute power monster relatively inexpensively with slight mods, and that is not much of an option with the GT3

I will probably make some mods, though nothing that would require engine out etc...

a GIAC tune and a few bolt-ons can yield a realible 600 hp in the GT2. go to rennlist and 6speedonline for more details

It may be a good idea, to read threads on rennlist.com

The board has a lot of threads, on just this subject.

    Two different cars.

If anything, the 996 GT2, is fully depreciated and a collectors car, at the same time.

I have had two 997's and I bought a 997 over a 996 Turbo that was like new, so as you can tell I prefer the 997 highly over the 996, IMHO. I think the 997 looks better and the inside is much nicer. Having said all of that, the 996 GT2 is an unbelievable car. It was the one car that I drove in that seemed almost F40 fast in acceleration. As others posted, if you want an absolute rocket in a straight line it is hard to beat the 996 GT2, in fact IMHO it felt faster than a 997 GT2.1.

You have to drive both cars to fully appreciate and decide.

Very difficult to read the opinions of others and know for sure what you will be most satisfied with.

The GT2 will impress you in ways the GT3 can't!

Not true, and I would not do GIAC. Only way to get 600hp is with modified turbos. This has been covered on 6speedonline.com extensively. Maybe 580 hp with 1.2 bar tune, Europipe exhaust, 5 bar fpr, and upgraded waste gates and dv's.

I love my 996 GT2, looks so much better than the standard 996 turbo. I too was thinking about getting a 997.1 GT3 or RS, but I wanted a car with a higher speed potential to my 360 Spider. Your CS would be too close in performance. I would recommend something different, and the GT2 would fit the bill, and be even rarer than your CS.

How is the market for 996 GT2s in the US?
Are the cars on the market usually well cared? --or just "standing around" and facing problems due to stand-still?
What is the realistic price range - for early (2001/2) and series 2 (2005) cars?
Have there been Club Sport models actually sold in the US?
Best places to look for good examples?

No N. American factory built Club Sport models.

Unless, a factory built car was imported into the U.S., and it was approved by the EPA and DOT.

US cars are usually sweet; low miles and not tracked.
The 01's would be Euro; Iron brakes.
02 to 04 are the sweet spot.
I think there are 5 or 6 2005 cars in the US.
No club sports imported but many have been semi-converted to that spec.

The 997 GT3 is more "practical"
    Screw practical.

Ebay and cars.com are where the best bang for the buck are.

Watch Autotrader.com, also. One mint example still left at RPM Sports Cars, yellow. Prices run currently from 70k-89k depending on year and mileage. Still an amazing deal for a car that was 180k +

    Thank you LightGuy and Mattyrae.
Carbon disc material changed in 2002, MY 203 I think.
But are these cars generally maintained well and continously in the US - or are the now after roughly ten year more "Trailer queens"?
Since heavy damage to the engine can occure while leaving them unused...
Better to go to officail Porsche dealer for example or privat?
    Thank you for any advice.
Indeed a great car - if one if not scared away by "widdow-maker" image... :)

Just need to get a ppi done. I bought a 2002 with 3500 miles recently. Great car, drive it once / week, but it just snowed here today. :(

6speedonline.com and rennlist.com are a better place to ask questions about a Porsche GT2 you might be looking at.

If you are not looking potentially for 550-600 hp, then the 997.1 GT3 is a great car. The 997.2 are still for the most part over the 100k asking price depending on options and mileage.

The reason I feel they call it the widow-maker is because a bunch of idiots took a sharp corner and floored the throttle when turning, which resulted in aprox. 1 bar of boost and the car probably in a ditch, instead of feathering the throttle lightly until through the corner.
