    This is my turbo...according to the book 0-60 is 4.3 - my 355 is 4.6 ...
So we're talking about 3/10 of one second...

i am probably the biggest P-car fan you can find and love porsches and will forever, however I would take a 355 in a heartbeat. More passion, better looking and more fun. The 997 is a wonderful car and I have driven the S version already and can tell you that it is very quick. Probably on par with the acceleration of a 355 but then again it is more fun to drive when accelerating. Plus pull up to any stoplight and regardless of which one takes off quicker I can promise you all eyes will be on the ferrari. Give me a GT3 and then my opinion changes

Are you kidding me? You are comparing a Maserati coupe to a 997? Perhaps in a straight line the two are equivalent but once the road gets twisty, its not even close. BTW who cares about 50-100 mph acceleration times in 6th gear? 6th gear is only for fuel economy and top speed therefore its a silly comparison. You can't put the Maserati in the same sentence as a Gallardo. If you were racing in 5th gear either the other guy was not trying or you were at speeds most sane people would not approach on the street.

I agree the F-car would be more involving to drive and more fun than the P-car but the P-cars are freakin bulletproof. 25K miles with the original clutch. I would go through the rear p-zeros every 4-5K miles. The two years I had my 996 turbo, I drove the crap out of it and the thing never flinches. As far as 0-60 on the street, nothing even comes close. The car was chipped and I would rev it to around 4K RPMs and drop the clutch. With the psm shut off the car would spin, then hop a little on all 4 wheels and lay you back in you seat like you got rear ended by a semi. Alas I too felt the car was not involving enough therefore I went with the 360 and a heavily modified Viper GTS, two of the most "involving and viceral cars available" IMO. The 911 turbo would be the perfect daily driver though.

A friend of mine has a 996C4,its slightly modded to give another 20bhp.About a month ago we pulled up next to a F355GTB,off the line we pulled about half a car length,we held that up to about 60km/h(30mph?) from there to 120-130km/h(75mph?) he pulled ahead slightly. After that up until about 230 km/h(125mph?),to say he blew the doors off of us would be an understatement.I had to help my friend pick his jaw up off his lap.As most of you know, you basically give a C4 4000rpm and dump the clutch,no wheelspin it just bites and away you go.So imho I doubt a 997C2 stands a chance against a F355.

So how much do you weigh? Add that to the awd system and you have at least 300-400 pounds vs. a C2 perhaps more. One must take that into consideration.

FL355, no way a 355 can keep up with a 993 turbo, if thats a 993, looks like it, but is it a 964? If a 993 those cars could do as low as a 3.6 to sixty...and only got better as speeds increased (low 12 quarters, 355 was in the low 13's).

Hi Phong,I weigh 82kg,the guy in the F355 also had someone with him though.I see your point but as far as I know the 997 is heavier than a 996 and a C4 usually has better 0-60mph times than a C2.Anyway,I am sure it won't be long before someone on Fchat, with a F355 picks up a 997 on the road and will tell us about it.

I usually stick to MEASURED FIGURES. All the rest is just bar talk. If you want to compare two cars they must have all their hardware in good shape (clutch, tires, engine, etc.), professional drivers who know how to fully exploit the acceleration potential, and they must be able to repeat several tests and make an average.

The figures (from a broad base of world-wide magazine road tests) tell me the following facts:

    1) With the exception of GT3 and Turbo, I've never seen a 996 or 997 being as fast as a F355 on a straight line. F355 test drives always reported 1/4 mile times between 12.9s and 13.3s. The best Porsche 997 I've seen so far does 13.3s.

    2) Sure the turbo is faster, but that's not the point. The Modena and F355 are easier to drive on twisty roads than the brutal turbo Porsches - and more entertaining as well. Besides, the lap times on twisty racetracks are VERY similar - a 996 Turbo does Hockenheim in 1'14''6, a Modena in 1'15''0... and the Porsche pulls away only in the straight. On the curves the Modena stays glued to the 996, and the F355 is not far behind (1'15''3).

    2) Don't slag off Maseratis so quickly, Phong - just try a Spyder CC on a twisty road, and you'll see what I mean. OK, it's not a Gallardo, but for a relaxed GT it' actually pretty good. At Hockenheim the Maserati Spyder laps faster than the PORSCHE 996 Cabrio. These are FACTS, not fiction.

    3) Dulcis in fundo... at Hockenheim the F355 lapped in 1'15''3 in 1997 - the new Porsche 997 can just do it in 1'15''6... I can happily keep my F355 and smoke all those shiny new Porsches for a few more years, whenever the driving gets real.
