A good friend of mine is looking to buy a 997 generation 911 with fairly low miles, but is curious about future mechanical costs related to ownership. What are your thoughts on the reliability of 997s and what are common mechanical costs like for a 2-3 year old example (assuming one owner, good condition, etc.)? I know that brake work or a new clutch for certain Ferrari can be as much as 5 figures; are Porsches similar?

    Thanks!

I needed brakes at about 20k miles; about $1300 because you replace pads + rotors. otherwise no issues whatsoever

does yours consume a lot of oil? I'm going through a quart every ~2500 miles; have heard of much worse (like a qt every 500-750 miles).

I have gone through 2 extra quarts since new. My Neighbor with an 08 DI goes through a quart every 1,000 miles or so. It is my every day car, and it works great.

Its my DD too (only car, actually), and its a great car, but the hit-or-miss oil consumption is rather odd.

Hey the owners manual for my 328 GTS says to expect a quart every 500 miles :D

So maybe not so bad, eh?

I have a Supercharged, completely rebuilt from the ground up 06 997S, and other than oil changes, and brakes, the car has been great. The clutches in 997's are self adjusting, and they really hold up, and are not expensive at all when they fail. PM me if you have any questions, this is my 39th Porsche, I know them fairly well.

check rennlist and beware of 2005s built in the first 6 months. the dreaded rear main seal issue know to haunt 996s has been a problem on early 997s. on mine the intermediate shaft failed just shy of 20k miles resulting in an engine replacement. it happened while sitting at a traffic light. apparently this shaft failure is a known issue and will arise in the first 20k-25k miles if a bad part. while i like the 997 its definitely my last high-end volkswagen.

I just replaced a Cayenne engine that cracked a plastic coolant pipe under the plastic intake manifold. Porsche knows this is an issue but there is no service campagn. Dealers want $2700 to update to to aluminum pipes. I love older Porsche's but the late models are just a high end VW now.

    20,000 miles here, since new:

3 oil changes. (Per book only needed one at 20k!)

    2 pair rear tires.

    1 pairs front tires.

    No.

My brother has an '07 997. Normal maintenance only, although the car is fairly new and low miles.

Porsche, Merc and BMW are expensive, but exotic cars (Ferrari, Lamborghini, etc.) are a completely different game.

my '96 Twin has 52k on the clock and original clutch..owned this car longer than ANY other..would drive it everyday if work allowed...a few electrical issues, but drivetrain-wise--nothing.

Good to know, I'll pass the word on. What do you mean by a self adjusting clutch? My friend (who is looking to buy) is in the process of learning how to drive stick... well hasn't really started yet. He knows not to learn on the Porsche though!
