Yes, it's true I did spend some time in a 997. Porsche is providing 2 cars for the annual "International Motor Press Association Test Day". If you are a member of the automotive press, and a member of IMPA, you can register for their test day on September 9th and 10th and go drive a bunch of the new cars for the next model year. You spend the first day on public roads and driving SUVs up and down a ski slope. You spend day 2 driving around the North & South combined course at Pocono.

    This year, highlights include:

    - Continental GT
    - Elise
    - 997 Carrera and Carrera S
    - Maybach
    - C6 Corvette
    - Land Rover LR3

    - Rumoured to be in attendance include a new 3 series, a bunch of euro-only "city" cars from Bosch and a few other odds & ends...

I will not be able to attend the event this year, so some friends from Atlanta were in with some cars and I met them out on LI for a quick cruise. We spent some time on 25a whipping through Muttontown & Cold Spring Harbor. We got some nice twisties up near Mill Neck (roads I know well) and thoroughly put the car through the paces.

    Here's my impressions:

    - Not a fan of the interior styling, that's my biggest complaint (!!)

    - Suspension is magnificent. It really harkens back to the 3.6 Turbo setup: firm, responsive, yet I never had that moment of "am I gonna lose the back end?" that I always had in the 993 and 996

    - Power is VERY even. Porsche has a long history of managing a rather dramatic torque curve with gearing. This seems to not be the case in these cars as the power band seemed very evenly distributed through the range. Much more low-end grunt that the 360.

If I were getting one, which I'm not, but if I were, here's what I'd do to the car:

    - New wheels. The stock 19"s look too "Corvette"

    - New exhaust. Rumour has it, TUBI is making a set of pipes for the 997

    - ROW Springs. Drop that ride hight to European levels.

Some dealers have cars to show (so call around if you want to see them).

I never really liked the 996, preferring the 993 for it's more "traditional" Porsche look. The 997 seems to return to that a bit, even in the interior, which I find comforting.

    I like it.

First of all, Jon you're a dead man walking! ;-)

Secondly, Emil I'm glad you had a chance to put it though the paces. i just got back from my dealer where they were prepping a couple of 997's for their intro on Saturday. My first impression was it's still a 996 from a distance. upon closer inspection it does have cues toward my 993 and the front end is a huge improvement. I liked the 19's only because they help to fill teh wheel wells better than the 18's did. The interior is a HUGE step up from the 996 in quality of materials. As for layout...I will always prefer simple as opposed to electronic gadgets in a sports car. The F-cars still understand that and have my respect in that regard. In a nutshell, it's a nice car...but I wasn't bowled over and my 993 will remain in my stable for now (plus an addition in the near future...I hope). Here are a couple of cell phone pics from my visit...

    Agreed, BUT!

    - The base car had the plastic materials from the base Cayenne and Boxster which looked TOO cheap

    - The two S's had wood and carbon and was TOO nice and TOO plush.

I want the interior to do two things:

    - Tell me when I need to shift, slow down, get gas, etc.

    - Be completely invisible and non descript like the 993, 355, 360, Elise, etc.

    Just my opinion...

Another 3-5 yrs of boring looking cars from Germany with Japanese interiors.I can't tell the f--cking difference between 996 and a 997. Wait, let me get my magnifing glass. Oh yea, the cooling vents on the engine are more spread apart, and whats that, the dash is from the Cayanne as opposed to the Boxster. Wow 19" rims. Larger direction signals! After all of these yrs, and many I really loved the 911, its starting to look like an upside down tub! People will buy them though. Who would ever think that a Cayanne Turbo would sell! People bought those. Go figure!

Hey Pchop: Remember that Cayenne Turbo that forced me onto the infield grass at the bus stop at The Glen? That was one seriously fast car. I'd like to see ANYTHING stock that has 4 doors do that same run against the 355 and win...

    I'd buy a Cayenne Turbo before I bought an S-Class, 7-Series, A8L, or a Quattroporte... and I LOVE the A8L. Love it!

Also, in person, the dimensions of the 997 are much different than the 996 -- if you see the two next to each other, you can really tell the difference. It's subtle, but noticable...

    - ...Just like 912s and 911s...

    - ...Just like late model 911s and SCs...

    - ...Just like the variations between late model SCs and Carreras...

    - ...Just like late model Carreras and 964s...

    Porsche follows an evolutionary tradition.

My gripe with Porsche is that they've lost their way. They're not racing at the moment. They've forgotten what it is to win and that impacts the cars they make and the brand they have: They're trying to compete with Mercedes and BMW instead of Ferrari.

Oh, and a 911 is one of the most difficult cars to drive fast, but if you can master the art of managing all that rear-end weight, it's an amazing, amazing, amazing experience, but we all know that, right Eric?

I couldn't have said it better myself Emil. There's nothing like feeling of a 911...especially at the limit (as I slowly try to get out of the seat after a high speed run sweating profusely from utter concentration). ;-)

Porsche...There is no Substitute. Unless you have an F-car of course. :)

I like Porsches. They're fun cars that, while not necessarily providing a seat-of-your-pants thrill with the consistency and magnitude that Ferrari's do, still offer a loveable, throwable, wildly enjoyable ride.

From a stylistic standpoint, I like the 997 quite a bit. The whole evolutionary-retro look appeals to me, what with the headlights, gear shifter, side-hips, etc. I like the 19"-ers, and while the innards of the vehicle are certainly "busier," with it comes more of a refined look -- especially when compared with the somewhat "plasticky" interior the 996 was plagued with.

I certainly can't comment on the driveability (yet!), but from all I've read, I understand the driving experience to be substantially better than the 996 in almost all dimensions. I must admit the more sensitive mapping settings with the sports chrono mode is wayyy cool.

Don't knock it till ya try it fellas. ;)
