I'm thinking of buying one after the sale of my F430 and don't know if the extra money for the second generation GT3 is worth it. I found a used yellow one with three thousand miles plus that's on consignment close to me at Champion Porsche but the owner is asking sticker price for it!!! Doesn't he know that he is selling a used car in a dead market... Anyone own or has driven one of this second generation cars and think of them to be worth it or the hell with it and save over $25k buying the earlier one. Also the 996GT3 are a real bargain.

You wont find a bargain if you want a MK2. But you can get Mk1 with low miles for 90k or less.

I havent driven either but if you were to buy a MK2, i would order new. Used prices arent that much lower compared to the fun of spec'ing your own car.

I have driven the 997mkI but not the new one. I was under the impression that there are not any spots available to order a new one. If you know of a dealer with open spots let me know and thanks in advance.

The .2 is marginally quicker and has significantly better aero and turn-in (the latter due to suspension geometry refinements). But you can't go wrong either way.

You should be able to get the used one for five figures; there are reportedly no new .2 build spots but several sitting on dealer lots across the country which can be had slightly under sticker. Good luck!

Other than being .2 faster, what is the difference in an MKI and an MKII? Price and features. Would pictures help?

    Thanks.

He will have more info on his allocation in the next 2/3 weeks, they will have a Porsche Meeting of all dealers and will know more. Porsche has indeed reduced GT3 production!

50-55K for a real nice car.

60-65K for a low mile car.

996 GT2 - low production #'s bargain supercar, that is fully depreciated.

Got offered a new one the other day. You are talking about an RS or the regular GT3?

Mostly the motors. Mk I had a 3.6 litre motor, the Mk II has a 3.8. Mk II also has dynamic engine mounts. Slightly different bodies.

I drove the 2010 for five laps at Willow Springs and it is superb.

The motor and suspension are to die for. I had 2 996 GT3's and those are relics in comparison to what they've built here. It's also been a fair bit since I've driven the 997 Gen 1 at Willow Springs, but I don't recall the front spring rate being as high as on the Gen 2. That, coupled with the rear bar (which seemingly doesn't give an inch) limits body roll a minimum. It's extremely precise. It's the best Porsche chassis I've driven next to my prepped 996 Cup. Seriously, its an incredible chassis on track - I can't comment on how it useful it is a daily driver, but when pushed its as good as a 911 can get.

The engine pulls like a pack of mules from the midrange up to 8500 & announces itself with a wicked scream while doing so. The clutch is pretty stiff but not as stiff as the shifter. It's a very short throw & you need to positive with it. These things don't bother me but I think it might be a bit of a pain to drive in traffic.

The (steel) brakes were also excellent. Very little fade & no mushy pedal. The Gen 2 also gives you centerlock wheels which surely save a few pounds and more aero bodywork which is evidently functional.

In comparison to the 430 the Gen 2 is exponentially more raw and focused & dare I say it on F-Chat....a better drivers car. I sold my 430 this past November so I'm offering you a fair comparison.

I keep my new cars for a long time and don't worry about depreciation so if it were my money I wouldn't hesitate cutting the check for the Gen 2. You shouldn't have to put much, if anything into it with what you get for the 430.

If you're interested in an RS, Hoehn Porsche here in San Diego called me and asked if I was interested in one. Evidently they have a white/red RS in the showroom for $155K. 2007 RS's are still going for $130K (which is more than sticker in 2007), so a 2010 RS @ $155K might hold its value.

I love spending other people's money!

Not sure where you obtained your data from however, no one in their right mind is paying 130K for a '07 or for that matter a '08 RS. Current average SELLING price for a proper, (no story) '07 with under 5K miles is 105-110. How about a fully optioned '08 RS, (MSRP 151) w/700 miles for 120K? And I wouldn't expect the 997.2RS to hold its market value and better then the 997.1. There are several 2010's around the country sitting at MSRP and the 2011 has already been released.

Just checked Autotrader & there's one for $129K. There's also a black/orange one for sale here in San Diego for $125K. Have a look here http://www.gt3rsregistry.com/VINs.htm as well to see what some asking prices are. I completely agree that they probably don't sell for that much and others are indeed listed at ~$115K, but nevertheless, they hold their value better than a regular GT3. Besides, what's cooler than a badass orange or green 911?

Keep in mind the '07 base price difference, GT3 = 106,000, RS = 123,200. I believe the higher RS market value is only marginal from a % standpoint. The RS is certainly the drivers car but like the CS not for everyone.
