Have to decide within a week which to choose for a daily driver (all weather and traffic conditions):
    '07 997 TT Tip,Silver/Black,or
    '06 SL65 Black/Black
Both brand new, same sell price of $145k,resale non issue(lease for 24 mo through my Company)

    What would you do?

No compromise, buy the 997TT tip. It is a very premium built car with the extra seats if you need it, it has AWD, they are as solid as they come reliabilty wise also. IMO, I have always viewed Mercedes as pieces of crap, and they are. The Porsche is the best between the two- It is luxurious and the driving experience is above par.

I agree. Go with the 997TT tip. AWD will come in handy in Illinois and I believe the 911 will be more enjoyable to drive on a daily basis.

My friend's dad has an SL55 and it's in the shop once a month for electrical problems. He hates it now. Not sure if the SL65s have some of the same problems, but I haven't heard any problems as Porsche TTs not being good daily drivers. Go with the 997TT. Looks better too imo. :)

I'm going to go against the grain here and say the SL65. It's all cars to all people.........a sporty GT coupe, a sunny-day roadster, a drag-strip torque monster, king of the highway passers, and it's all done in total comfort and luxury. Also, it's an automatic, which is great for traffic jams and the like.

I love the Porsche, but to drive everyday I'd take the Mercedes.

You drive a 2002 honda accord and you are advising him which car he should buy based on what?
Anyway, back to the original question I have had plenty of 911's and a few SL's and currently have an SL65 and the two cars aren't even close to me. The Benz blows the Porsche away on all levels except if your thing is track days or hard canyon runs. The benz has way more features, a nicer larger interior, an awesome hardtop convert at the touch of a button and most important it has 604hp with close to 750ftpnds of tq. Also, it sounds like the deal you have is great considering the base price for an 06 is around 189. Go drive them both, that is really the way to tell which one is for you.

It really depends on what you want form a car. I personally would take the 997tt without hesitation. The SL is just to bloated for my tasts, even the 997 isn't really a lightweight, but it will handle a lot better than the big Merc. Also, the all wheel drive will come in handy in the real world with rain and snow, plus the new interior is a big step up from the old one.

I would get the 997TT because I love the sound of Flat Engine I drive a 95 Leg and going from that to a Honda with an I-4 there subie sounds waaay more sporty

Does open-air motoring appeal to you much? The Benz will do a lot of things well, the Porsche will do a few things great.

I'd vote for the 997TT also, but I'm strongly biased to Porsche's, MB's have never done much for me.

However, for that pair of specific choices, I'd also consider that silver is more visible than black, if you're that much on the edge between them. For daily driving in mixed to congested traffic, you're more likely to have an accident in the black car. I also dislike how much work black is to keep looking clean.

Just purchased 997 TT 6 speed. Absolutley love it, even though it is not my daily driver, I still drive it every day. I am still breaking it in, already have 700 miles on it in 2 weeks. The car is fast, easy and fun to drive. Can't go wrong with the turbo. Cousin, had an SL55, fast car, but got boring to drive after a while, personally I think its more of a chick car.

I drive a 996TT every day, and I'll say unless you WANT a sportscar, the MB might be the better choice. The ride is much harder, and the wife complains the car beats her up.

I would say the SL. I know, I often use one as a daily driver. Not to mention 65s can be had for far less then sticker.

Why, because I have a hard time with someone who probably hasn't seen either car in person say he thinks one brand is crap and advises someone to purchase something based on nothing? No offence but I have no problem with a kid or anyone chiming in and saying he prefers the looks of one over the other or likes one brand better for his own reasons but to really offer advice about something that you have no experience with to someone wanting real opinions to me is pointless. Either way, not my thread and I hope he picks what is best for him.

Lol, I knew it had to be a Merc owner. Yes, I do drive a Honda. Obviously, I am advising him based on knowledge, you know, stuff I have heard from owners, read in magazines, and data I picked up from driving the 997TT. I've been in a SL65, never drove it, and yes, it is a beast, it is a really nice tourer. The interior seemed a little tacky though, I don't know. I do not own any expensive cars but my Dad has a couple, so do his friends, and once in a great while, I get the privilege of driving some of them. Sometimes, when I'm bored, I go and test drive cars at the dealership. So yeah, I guess I have a some say. IMO, MB owners have the most biased opinions. They think they are driving the best damn car money can buy when in fact, they are driving the biggiest piece of **** in it's price class. I could outdrive your MB in my Honda.

The Porsche's interior is roomy enough. Hey Jeff, I'm just curious, can you fit through a door? Or do you have to turn sideways?

Dude, your reading comprehension level is of that of a 4th grader. Where in the hell did I write that I was comparing the two based on looks alone?

I don't live in a ****hole like Maryland, I see these cars everyday.

I find the 997 TT to be much more desirable than the SL. Eventhough it has 600hp+ , you ll have much more fun driving the P when the roads arent straight. I dont know about you but i prefer cars that have stiffer suspensions/harder ride.

The Benzo is far better for traffic and more luxurious as a daily. TT tip is just a neutered sportscar.

I always say the same thing.

Picture yourself on a Friday night after a late meeting, raining (or worse) facing an hour and a half ride home in traffic before dinner.

    There's your answer.

Just did and made my mind...
Bad color combo of the 997 (Silver/Grey) and a premium of $10k (raising the total to $16k over the SL) helped seal the deal.
Thanks to everyone here for their input and opinion.

Mind if I ask what dealership you're going through?

BTW, you're starting rack up a nice AMG stable with the G55 and now SL65. I bet you can't wait to drive it around with the top down..oh wait..we're in Chicago ;).
