hi all! one year ago this week i bought my first ferrari - a 2008 599gtb. the past year has been a blast. i drove it over 6,000 miles, had a lot of fun, and met some great guys with similar interests. but my interest in ferrari actually started three decades ago with the 308/328 (and yes, magnum pi). so today i took the plunge and purchased a 1989 328gts!

you might wonder why the title of this post is 'a barrel of monkeys'. well, the reason is that the car was ~200 miles up the coast from my base in los angeles, and i was considering whether to flatbed it down or to drive it. some helpful f-chatters noted that driving the 328 on some of the back/mountain roads north of los angeles would be 'more fun than a barrel of monkeys'. well, i've had about as much fun as a barrel of monkeys before, but MORE fun? that theory demanded to be tested. so i did. :)

i flew up this morning, closed the deal, and drove back ~250 miles (mostly on country & mountain roads)... and i'll be darned if driving the 328 really isn't MORE fun than a barrel of monkeys.

completely complimentary to the 599 experience. very visceral and perfect for the type of driving i enjoy. so anyhow, i look forward to participating in the 308/328 community. :)

Welcome. Great to hear how much you, as an owner of a modern V-12 Ferrari, like the vintage V8.

We picked up a 308GTB in Portland, OR, and the blast south thru California was just the FIRST leg of the trip!

Congrats, and welcome to the Section.

first, thanks everyone for the welcomes!

in regards to the 599, it is a fantastic car and i do intend to keep it. the two are completely complimentary: classic vs. modern; 8 cylinder vs. 12 cylinder; mid-engine vs. front-engine; three-pedal vs. paddle-shifter; targa vs. gtb; manual vs. power-steering ... and quite probably appreciating vs. depreciating asset. :)

they BOTH represent art AND engineering to me, but from two different time periods. while the 599 is a marvel of modern engineering and a great GT for weekend trips with my wife, it doesn't offer the same experience of 'me and the road' that the 328 does. at least that is my initial impression. i'll be testing this theory out some more tomorrow - we are driving over 50 miles of mountain roads in the morning. life is good! ;)

Congratulations to your new addition. I have an 89 GTS as well except mine is red/black. Enjoy your driving connection with your 328.

Just took my "new to me" 328 for a short cruise on some local country roads, so I totally agree with it being more fun than a barrel of monkeys!

one of the girls from zooworld was coming out of the grocery store with her cart piled high with banana boxes today.
i asked if she had a barrel of monkeys to feed.
she said yes and assured me thay aren't very much fun.
