Apple is now the "biggest" tech company; besting the evil empire in market cap $228B to $219B at close of trade today.

    YAY!

And it only took about 25 years!

    Very cool! Go Apple! :)

I thought they may be squawking about this in their "news" section, but apparently not.

As to it taking about 25 years, overcoming (if only in terms of market cap) the Evil Empire has to be cause for celebration..... They continue to post record #'s, according to Wikipedia IE's market share is down to around 50% (from over 95% a few years back), and they've just not got anything "appealing" to sell (IMO).

OK, Windows 7 appears to be their best effort to date, but it seems the Vista disaster (admittedly not entirely their fault) continues to influence buyers..... The "if I've got to change *again* I may as well go to Mac" TV campaign seems to have done well!

Time to break out the black turtlenecks :)

    Cheers,
    Ian

The big reason (IMHO) - They're not an abusive monopoly (as proven by both US and European courts).

Nothing wrong with a monopoly - Cisco is also one, but they're *very* mindful of not being seen as abusing that position - Bills Evil Empire has lied, cheated and cajoled many, many companies over the years.

Sure, Apple isn't whiter than white, but I don't see any "evil" in them - You may not like 'em, or their prices, but at least the market is starting to realize their value.

    Cheers,
    Ian

You don't see evil in their restrictive practices, their snubs to the open source movement, their stranglehold over the apple store arbitrary yanking of apps, their prudish stance on what they consider to be porn, their inconsistent standards, their switchups, their bizarre no-cash policies, their sandboxing of developers, their overpriced items that take a long time to get close to a full feature set (cough MMS on iPhone, cough), etc., etc.

It's had some good hits and it has done some good things but like any huge company, Apple ain't mildly off-white. It's as black as Steve's turtlenecks, and nastier than Steve Ballmer's stage theatrics.

Everything follows a natural growth and decline pattern. Apple too will begin its downward slide one day. For now they have reason to celebrate, I guess. Android is looming, though.

I'm happy for Apple and Mr. Jobs.
I've been VERY happy with their products and so I can only hope for their continued success.

Big (non) deal! - The DOJ is looking into how they came to dominate the market (Good business model maybe?) and *if* they may have abused that position. [Possible]

*Totally* different scenario to the evil empire - The highest courts around the world decided they're evil, and fined 'em accordingly - A *long* way from being "investigated" - They all get investigated from time to time. [Even the whiter than white Cisco ;)]

    Cheers,
    Ian

You boys can't let MMS go can you? - It's there now, move on.

As to your other examples, no evil there IMO - Just (very) sharp business practice.... Open source may be the biggest threat they face, why should they encourage it? [Although, there are plenty of OS apps available under OSX, the underpinnings of which are OS of course.]

Sure, they control (with an often misdirected iron fist) *their* stores - They own 'em, they decide what gets in and what doesn't - Just like any other store..... Is Macys evil for not stocking product "x"? [I guess if you're trying to sell product x, maybe ;)]

    As always, my 02c,
    Cheers,
    Ian
