A choice to make: respraying my door

if the scratch is just in the clear coat, you can usually polish it completely (or almost completely) out. Re-spraying can be tricky. What color is your car?

Rosso Scuderia, i dont think you will get rid of it without respray. If its only door = the paintshop can spray the full part = it will not be noticable at all. I would respray it, just chose good paintshop. Make pictures of the scratch and save them for future........

 

I would go with Masar's reply, I'd be continuosly annoyed about the scratch not being completely polished out .

And yes, the b*st*rd who did it should be "bobbitted".

 

get it resprayed by a top notch shop.

i am less than impressed with the "factory" paint job on various models i have seen over the years....... so i don't know what your rep is in awe over.

if the scratch is just in the clear coat, you'd be surprised how much you can get out with polishing. If the scratch went down to the primer or beyond the clear coat, then all the polishing in the world won't fix it.

Your vandal will get his dues too--Karma works in mysterious ways. I could see how a car can get scratched from people posing with it for photos and having their buttons and zippers rub against it. But to scratch somebody's Ferrari is unforgivable. Most of the people on this site would have him waterboarded, or worse.

You should try polishing the scratch first. If you can still see any of it, then apply a synthetic polymer like Liqui-Tech. After a couple of days, you can apply the polymer again. Every time you apply it, it will fill in more of the blemish, and you'll add protection to your paint in the process.

If all of the above fails, you're still only out about $100 or so. Then you can have it resprayed. And if you do get it resprayed, like others here have mentioned, make sure to use the best body shop you can find.

A good body repairman is an artist--an uncompromising perfectionist. You will know the difference.

 

take rays' advise first.bring your car to a detail shop and have them try to buff out the scratch.it might be a clear coat scratch and could be polished out with a medium grit compound.if its into the paint you need to respray,and yes,who ever did this intentionally should have all their fingers fall off

 

Generally, if you can put your fingernail in it, it needs to be sanded and painted. I would certainly let a pro try to get it out before doing any painting. But make no mistake, I'd fix the problem.

 

I use this stuff and it's amazing for removing light to medium scratches. Like I say, if it didn't go beyond the clear coat and down into the paint, then this stuff will make even the most terrible looking scratches disappear. If the scratch looks light grey, then it's usually just the clear coat. Depends on how hard the SOB pushed when scratching.

Anyway, you can get this stuff from Auto Zone, etc. Just rub a little on a micro fiber cloth and go to town. It helps to follow up with a polishing liquid of some sort, such as a cleaner/waxer, or maybe even a fine cutter type liquid. Then finish with some sort of wax or detailer.

I have used this stuff with a circular buffing wheel on a DeWalt grinder - works great. Just don't do too much and burn the paint or anything. You can get the same results by hand, it just takes a little longer.
