Micah, those are great... Did you set the camera down somewhere so that it would be still...? Whenever I try to use the delayed exposure settings on my camera, the pictures come out horrible, because I can't keep my hand still... How did you know when to throw the lamp...?

i set the camera on the table, put the lights on, focused the camera, hit timer, shut the light off, hit shutter....

waited for the time countdown then once the shutter clicks i just threw the light.. doing these kinda shots handheld are really tough

Every more-than-casual photographer should have a tripod. Even cheap $20 ones are better than hand-holding in low-light and you can buy some good ones in the $50-100 range. Very good ones though are in the $500 and up range (particularly carbon fiber) and you buy the tripod and head separately.

Why would you need a carbon fiber tripod? Shouldnt a regular plastic one work?

    Great pictures btw.

Lighter and stiffer. If you're a nature photographer that has to pack their equipment for a few miles, it's a big deal. Even a more plain tripod, you don't want plastic - go for extruded aluminum.

I do a lot of long exposure stuff. A laser pointer is a great accessory to have.

I did a lanscape shot of my house on a dark night and I lit up the corners and "lines" of the house with the pointer. It looked like a scene from "Tron" or something :)

I also do super long exposures and I move around and sit in differnt places. It is freaky to see a pic with 3 or 4 of you and in each position you're semi-transparent :)

Makes sense. It just seemed like a carbon fiber tripod was a little over the top. But if you have to pack it for miles, than cf would make sense.

Sadly I dont have it handy. When I moved last year I put all my pictures in boxes that are in my garage. I did that pic on print film not digital. I havent tried long exposure on digital yet - not sure how well it would work.

Some other things I did was take a shot of my back yard and take a flashlight and light up certain things. So I have a nice pic with the yard looking eery (because of the long exposure) and yet some trees are brighter because I hit them with the flashlight :). Another cool effect was standing behind the camera and shining the laser pointer in the direction the camera was pointing but shining it off into the distance - the camera picked up a beam shooting off into the distance, it was cool. I had one of me smoking a cigarette in 10 places. I lit it, moved, took a drag and kept doing that. Each time I stopped there was a very faint image of me, and a faint image of the glowing red cigarette tip where I held it and a slightly brighter glowing red spot where it lit up when I took a puff. I also did the flashlight thing on my car so the pic was sort of eery but my car was lit up with a flashlight during the exposure and it looked like it was glowing.

Long exposure is my favorite kind of pics to take!
