Does anyone know what this red light relates to on my car (pic 1). It stays on when the engine is running, i don't think it's anything to do with the charging system as i have a large red light under the ignition switch which goes out when the engine fires. According to the handbook it's the (No 33)Spia inserimento starter (luce rossa) Does this relate to the starter solenoid?
I have no oil temp reading and i have a green wire coming from the loom at the rear of the engine around the base of the firewall where the two heater hoses emerge from the chassis tube (pic 20 ). Should there be a sensor in the bottom of the sump near here? if so i have no tapping in the casing for this sensor!!! What's going on???

Graham, I think this is the choke light. the choke lever on my '73 car has a sensor switch at the lever end. Even though no choke cable is attached, it will cause the light to illuminate when pulled. Got me this one after cleaning the inside of the car!

Graham, I am not near my car at the moment, but there is a oil temp sender in the sump casting. It is close to the gear linkage universal joint, just to the right as you look towards the rear. It may be obscured from casual view by the forward engine mounting rectangular section chassis cross member. I think my oils temp sender cable comes off the loom which is clamped to the oval cross-member at the bulk head. Loom comes down right car sill and behind the right fuel tank.
sorry don't have photos to hand. check some of the gear linkage resetting posts I submitted as the cable may be spotted.

Strange as my choke had no switch at the back of the lever and i would have remembered if there was a spare wire in the centre consul!

On my car this is the choke light. It doesn't have a switch as we know it. From memory it has a connection on the lever only.

The sender unit for the oil temp is above that blanking hole, i am sure i found it when i was under the car!!

Will look sunday when we get her on the road

    Tony

PS i have a pressy for you as well, something that will come in handy!!!!!!!!

    Gents,
Here's my Euro Tipo E the first time I put 'er up on the rack. You can clearly see the same green wire that you referred to, Graham, & follow it to the sender located between the shifter shaft boot and the motor mount bracket (sender is partially hidden by the crossmember).

I've since replaced the coolng pipes & all hoses (including the long ones), the missing heat shield(s), the rubber connectors on the fuel tank crossover pipe, the wires from the alternator to firewall mounted fuse block and have adjusted the clutch linkage (you can see the bellcrank is not in the proper position) so I'm no longer fighting the coil spring...the pedal feels sooo much better (again, John C.s Sagas were put to good use)..., lubed the clutch cable and replaced the rubber boots. And that's just to tidy up what you see in this picture. Lotsa other squares filled, too. But that's the stuff of another thread.

'trust this helps you find the sender on yours, Graham...or NOT. :)
    Cheers,
    Coop

OK so i have tied up these two issues. The first one with the red light you are right it's the choke 'on' light the plate was bent under the lever which in turn operates the switch.
The next one is going to make you laugh!
I was rolling about under the car loking at the engine casing and thinking, How strange is this, My car has no tapping in the casing for the oil temp sensor, just a blank.
I have just looked closer and called myself all the names under the sun!
Take a look at the photo closely. That is a piece of masking tape which the guy whom stove ennamelled all my engine parts has puy there to blank the hole and has enamelled right over it!. I have not noticed and have filled the engine up with oil, hence the drip! I have got to say that the seal is pretty good!
Guess i had better drain the sump tommorow and fit the sensor.......what an idiot!

    Graham,
I was thinking we'd have to blame it on Luigi or Guido for forgetting to drill & tap the case! That would be a first!

And, yes, that's an amazingly tight seal, considering the material and the process. Just be thankful that your drip didn't turn into a deluge!!
Coop :) ('laughing WITH you...not at you.)
