What ever happened to that boat with twin TR 12s in the back?
Beautiful Gladiator 36'! Micheal Peters designed it, correct? Do you like it?? It'd be my pick of the current line up. Yours staggered or aligned? I guess I should look, huh? Just saved those pics for my "dream" list!!!
The Cigarette is about a gallon per mile when you're on it - maybe a tad better - 1.5 miles per gallon. Anyway, we rarely run the boats at open throttle as that is a sustained 5200+ rpm which is a strain on the motors. We usually "sprint" for a couple of minutes close or at WOT and cruise in the 70mph range. The Cigarette handles rough seas like a Ferrari handles curvy mountain roads - basically made to order!! We love it bumpy - usually three to four foot seas allows us to "fly" the boats.
Alan - Side by side. The setup in a Gladiator (side by side versus staggered) makes ZERO difference in speed whereas the staggered setup in other boats usually equates to a slight speed advantage. The Gladiator needs the weight in the rear to keep the nose up. I run with almost no tabs and never have a problem with the nose going loose on me. I have run side by side with the very same boat as mine that has staggered 525HP motors (a total of 50HP more than my setup) and we run exactly the same speed - about 89mph or so. Therefore, the staggered setup on our particular model boats may actually be a DISadvantage.
Jeffrey, Boat looks great! Its nice to see a TRUE offshore powerboating enthusiast. Too often these boats are purchased by the, "Fake-ass tough guy", right around a certain age (along with the Harley and the Rottweiler) and sold at a DEEP discount after a couple of uses...due to fuel costs, kidney abuse and the fear of the speed on the water! A shame unless you are a buyer! DL
Thanks DL! I am definately an enthusiast! Have been since the mid-90's and don't plan on stopping any time soon!
I love the Ferrari boat. I spend some months a year on a Sunseeker yacht but know nothing about of shore power boats, i am sure i saw one in the mags with a pair of Lambourgini V12 engines running it, has any boats ever run a pair of Ferrari V12 or Flat 12 engines???? Could your frend use a pair of these engines (ferrari)?? And would that warrent the use of the brand word ferrari?? I dont know you tell me.
You should see it from a jetski... Last summer (or maybe the one before that, im old and they all just blend together) my friend and i rode his sea-doo from ossining all the way down to the tip of manhattan island well south of canal st. and then turned back.
There was a race boat (catamaran hull) in Europe that campaigned a pair of high powered modified Lamborghini engines. I have a video of it. It is the most awesome sounding powerboat ever created!! Since the boats run almost flat out (6000rpm+) the engines - with no mufflers or exhaust systems - simply scream like a F1 car. It's incredible. As for dropping a pair of unmodified car engines into a powerboat - it would never work. High performance marine engines require a completely different setup. Cars have gears whereas most boat are a single gear - forward or backwards - and the engines have to make torque in a different manner and be made to run 6000+ rpm for an extended period of time. We - as normal every day drivers - do not run our Ferraris at 6000rpm for more than a few seconds here and there. Imagine that same engine running a hour long race flat out. The loads are completely different.
Here is your boat. It is the Spirit of Norway. They have been world champs the last few years running. http://www.spiritofnorway.com/show.asp?id=2 http://www.class1.worldoffshore.com/teams99/norway1/more_photos.htm Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
Anybody else around here besides me running smaller outboards? We can run triple digits for about the co$t of one months payment on a new Fountain. Mine is a 21' Laveycraft with a Bridgeport Merc. I do love the big boats too by the way, and the red one is AWSOME!
If you guys like fast boat videos, check out www.screamandfly.com The main page has a library of a bunch of videos, mostly little 18-24 footers like mine, but some big boats too.
There is an official ferrari spped boat. I think it is in the ferrari museum. I saw it on a documentry on ferrari. It is one of those old skool wooden speed boats with a 308 engine in it.
Anybody out there running an Italian boat? This is my Baglietto 16M built in Varazze Italy. Definitely not as fast as you offshore guys but still pretty respectable for a 1966, wood hull, 16 meter. With a name like Murphy, I'm not sure how all my toys end up being Italian? Murph Jeffrey are you a member of SCOPE? Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
I'm at the office right now but will get some interior shots at the house tonight. I take the boat to Catalina Island quite a bit and have run some pretty big swells with her. Her ratio of long hull to narrow beam really helps her in a seaway. Baglietto built PT boats, of which this hull is a derivative, so she is quite responsive and smooth in heavy seas. Murph
I just got home from taking a ride in this bad boy and I still have a grin on my face. We were hitting 4 and 5 foot cruiser wakes at 80 mph and barely felt them. The guy driving for us has the same model with twin 1100 hp motors that will crack the 120 mph mark. It was a pretty intense experience. Yes, that was a speed record boat back in the '50's with a twin supercharged 375MM motor. It reached a smige over 150... this is all off the top of my head so might be off here and there, I have the book at home if your really interested. Didn't Lamborghini capure several championships in Europe with those boats? Would anyone happen to know the hull manufacture of Lambo's race boats? This is one of the best active threads on F-chat! Marvelous boats everyone , and the 36 Gladiator is probably my favorite boat right now... though there are a few Fountains, Outerlimits, Skaters etc I wouldn't mind owning. Happy driving... and boating! joe
Thanks. Aside from a varnish job once a year it is really not any worse than a tupperware boat. It is slipped so it gets a haul out for hull antifouling paint once a year. And it has a boat mechanic check it over monthly to make sure all systems are working properly. I had the boat sprayed with an LP paint job that will look/last new for years. The trick with a wood boat is to stay vigilant with your maintenance schedule. It will suffer faster from neglect than a tupperware boat. Here's a little fun Italian powerboat history. In 1934 Baglietto and Maserati teamed up to win the one mile world speed. http://www.maserati-indy.co.uk/alfieri47.htm Murph
