Cambelts and tensioners replaced well as aux belts. Brand new water pump. Cleaned alloy castings and replaced hoses ect. Replaced every nut and bolt, re-painted sub-frame. Painted all covers and oil tank. Ready for another 45K miles....maybe:D:D Enjoy:)......or not:(....:D
MB: exscuse the random dates on the bottom of the pictures. The camera date needs setting every time i change the batterys and i dont know how to so i just press any button to get it started again.
Also i am looking for ideas on how to clean up the manifolds, i have tried wire wool but the metal is stained. Any ideas???

Looks great man, that's a big reason why I want to do my own engine out major. I'd do it over the winter, take a month or longer and detail the whole thing.

Are you kidding? I'm a 348 guy but most people do not understand the significant improvement made in the 355. The 355 is not a 348 with 75 more horsepower. If you just look at the pictures you will see and oil tank moved 2-3ft closer to the front of the car moving weight in a better position, the rear pick-up points to the suspension are beefier, the rear 348 airbox area is tubed and triangulated on the 355 for more rear stiffness, and the water pump as a timing belt failure point is taken right out of the equation. That my friends is just for starters.

    Hey chaa,

throw your stock manifolds in the trashcan and go
    with NAPerformance headers.
It is then no problem for you to compete with 360 cars.
You will then notice that your car is reving up much faster.
The stock headers are bull****. If you are examining the stock headers it is
simple to understand that they are killing some power from your engine.

Hi mate,i knew it was only a matter of time before some one said that. My manifolds are is great condition so i am hardly going to pay thousands of ££s just because they are discoloured. My car keeps with 360s anyways. I also drive an F430 as well if i need extra Omph;)
Na i will replace the standard manifolds with after market ones once the standard ones are trash:)

Mate the oil tank comes out because its attached to the block via two large nuts, the one on the side is a pig to get to in situ. The spanner being bloody large does not help:D And at the bottom of the tank there is a bushed stud hole that sits on a ......................stud:D:D attached to the subframe.Just lift the tank of. Its attached to the cars body via just two 10mm bolts. When ya ready mate i will send ya what details ya need to do yours. Walk in the park:D

    Hi Chaa,
Not sure if this is a good suggestion or not but my brother used alloy wheel cleaner to remove a load of ingrained dirt from the cylinder block of his car (not a Ferrari - a Fiat Coupe). Don't know if this would solve your problem - I guess it depends on what has caused the staining - are you sure the metal hasn't discoloured because of the heat affecting it over the years? Again this may be a ridiculous suggestion - I'm not too clever on technical things, it was just a thought that came into my head...

Did you do the work yourself? how hard was it?

i need to pull the engine out for service and i REALLY want to do it myself so i can take the time and replace every nut and bolt like you did. only problem is i have no lift.

    anyways, good work!

Mate its not very hard at all, even the mystical cambelt replacement and tensioning the bearings. I have some engine building experience dude to me building Twin Turbo V8 projects in the past. Its always been a hobby to me, a way of winding down;)
I to do not have a lift i used the twin floor jack method, the jacks lift the rear of the car about 4-5ft. Though from the floor one bit of advice that i would give is this. There are ywo sets of 6 bolts that hold the subfrane/engine to the body of the car. Undo the top 3 on each side first befor lowering the car fully on the trolley;);) Trust me:D....then undo the top and sides last.

    Chaa,
Thanks for the great photos. Your DIY projects are inspiring!
I used your online advise (FChat and Scuderia) on removing my rear 355 spider bumper and replaced my cats with Hyperflows, and exhaust with Capristo level 1's. Just finished last night, will fire it up today!
Went with Level 1's on your advise also, being a spider.....
    bst1

ps The manifold covers are stainless...they can be POLISHED. Jet Coat is another option.

Dudes i have had a few emails asking questions on were nuts and bolts were from and part numbers ect ect. Also that i have inspired a few folks to take on the job themselves. I think its fair and easyer to reply on this thread. Trust me this is no brain surgery to remove the 355 engine or put it back in.
I was my self guided through the engine removal process by an article wrote by a good guy who has now left F.chat:( He was RF and he was a good guy chased away by the BS of the site:( Anyways here's his engine removal process. http://ferrarichat.com/forum/showthread.php?t=53351
Once the engine was out the rest of the refurb was straight forward like the belts, tensioners, water pump, crinkle painting ect ect. As for were i got the nuts and bolts from, i took a few into my local fastener shop and bought a few hundred at a cost of £5 ;) And of cause the other parts like hoses and gaskets were bought from ferrari. The rear of the car was lifted from the floor via two 500mm jacks that lifted the rear approx 4ft which allowed the engine to be wheeled out with out turning it on the trolley.
Hope this helps and if you have any questions about anything that i have done let me know. There is nothing mystical about anything done.
MB: On the subject of the manifolds, i am experimenting with emery cloth and polish. It seems to be removing the stains. I will let you know how i get along
