We just picked up our new 1990 348TS. It's my girlfriend's car but she loves it. It's all black and is a really nice car. Found out the exhaust has a Tubi setup on it, which is even better.

A few things going on with it that we have some questions about. Whenever you shift gears a little quicker than normal the reverse lights come on. Then once you go into the next gear it goes back off. Any ideas on what is going on electrically? Can we unplug the reverse lights easy enough?

Next, a few questions on the speakers on the car. Where are they in the car exactly and how easy are they to remove and replace with better newer speakers?

And lastly the driver side parking light (not the cover itself, but the inside where the lense covers the parking area is broken and the plastic piece is loose in there) You can see in the picture that the light cover should be over the right side of the parking light but the piece has shifted over to the left) Can you get that piece replaced or ordered from Ricambi or what can you do to find another piece? I have attached a picture below.

Thanks for all your guys help.

It was a joke a friend of mine did on my Fiero. It doesn't have the side strakes, just normal side scoops made for my car. My car is more of a drag car.

Nice looking car...how much research did you do on the car?....you make it sound like you learned about the Tubi after you bought it.

Did plenty of research on the car. Have all the records on it. Major service was just completed about 2 years ago to this day or 3,000 miles ago according to the service records and the shop that did a little bit of work to the car before we bought it. We met the mechanic that did all the work on it. Had brand new plug wires installed the day of purchase. Car has brand new tires all the way around as well with a brand new oil change. The exhaust was not known what system it was when purchased because the owner didn't even know. I looked under the car when we got home as I didn't even think to double check what exact system it was and saw Tubi. It's not like we went down there and gave money and bought it blind. We visited the car 3 times about 3 hours away before final purchase. I guess the exhaust was just a nice added benefit.

The reverse light switch maybe just the sponge or bellows under the gate being jammed up and activating the switch - usually when you choose 2nd gear. Or it may be a faulty switch which is thankfully not expensive and an easy diy task to replace.

Have a look in link below for instructions/pics :)

With regard to light I would disassemble it and see if it can be glued otherwise I would try and source a 2nd hand light with a cracked lense (the usual problem) and make one good one out of the 2.

Ouch. I knew that was coming. She used to have a ProCharged Mustang and wanted something unique and something that would retain it's value better than a new Mustang.

As far as having a nicer car than me, well that's in the eye of the beholder. Mine may not be a Ferrari, but it's the faster of the 2 by far. No hate on Ferraris, believe me I think her car is awesome. Each kind of car is awesome in it's own way. I love mine. Not to make matters worse but my car will beat a 458 Italia and last year hurt a new F430 owner's feelings leaving it way behind :) It's all in fun, but I do absolutely enjoy going fast :) I helped her buy the 348 as we are both on the loan. Looking forward to sharing new stories or projects with you guys. Don't hate on the Fiero too much as it's been 11.70's in the 1/4 mile.

Nice to see another PFF member on Fchat!

I would check to see if any of the foam/spong under the shift gate was bunched up. The foam had deteriorated in my 348 and made it hard to shift into a couple gears. Nice it was an easy fix.

Hey man! Yeah I know, not very many PFF members I've seen anywhere other than our forum. Such a cool car, very excited for her and us, and we are going to enjoy it a lot. I'll check on that to see what's going on exactly on the shift gate. We haven't had a lot of down time to really tinker on it yet. Good to see you on here buddy!

I'm just bustin'. I try to find reasons why my sweetie needs to drive her Audi instead of the Ferraru. :) I actually have alot of respect for Fieros. I had an old boss that collected them and thought very highly of them.

Be careful with this one. As you know parts are what might be a challenge. So many like the foglight simply are unobtanium. Checkout the parts interchange thread here as well. Common parts without the Ferrari tax. Also checkout ricambiamerica.com if you haven't yet for exploded parts diagrams.

I always said they shoulda kept making the Fiero. Just when they got it right and the Fiero GT looked so good, they stop. No wonder they are out of business. Kinda like the
G8, they come out with a great car just to go under. Get rid of Buick, they have not built an exciting car since the GN.

Why a belt driver supercharger and not a large turbo? Oh and I have had a friend who worked at Sears back in the 80's tell me that a guy liked the handling of his Fiero better than his 928! I didn't believe it then, but since I've experienced the mid-mounted engine.. I'm a believer.

Pontiac and GM killed the Fiero just as they got it right. I think the Corvette guys got nervous about Pontiac building a better sports car then them.

Pics of underneath the H gate, how to adjust the closeness of the reverse switch to the gear chae and also the rubber bellows which superceded the horrible piece of sponge in the earlier cars.

You may be able to just get away with undoing the 2 screws either side of the gearstick to fetch the sponge out but if not working from the coin holder (which just pulls out) unscrew and pull out each plastic panel then lever up the gear surround

To answer your questions about speakers, you have two places to deal with. You'll find the tweeters up on the dash next to the side air vents. The whole air vent pulls out after releasing the tabs and you'll see the tweeter. There's a surprising amount of space behind there and that's where I placed my cross-overs.

The mids are down on the doors. Search this site and there are instructions for removing the door panel. The stock speaker is around the 6.5 inch size, but the bigger problem is that the enclosure is covered in carpet. I had my lower door panel covered in leather that left the speaker hole exposed and then fabricated a speaker grill that is notched on the top so as to butt up against the underside of the armrest.

And one note about working on the reverse light problem. Anytime you take the ashtray out and put it back, be sure not to break the ashtray by overtightening the two screws holding it down. Depending on your car, the screws may not be able to tighten all of the way down. It's possible that the top lip of the ashtray doesn't line up quite right and overtightening the screws will pull the ashtray down so far as to break the lip.

    Welcome! I recently acquired a 348 myself.

The speakers are behind the carpet on the bottom front of the doors. It's pretty easy to get at them. Just remove the middle panel (screws at each end and nylon retainers in the middle), then remove the screws at each end of the carpeted panel below it. It's also held with retainers (though mine weren't actually engaged so it was even easier for me). The speaker is easily accessible then.

Mine has coaxial speakers, not sure if that's factory or not. I know someone had the panel off before me, so they may have been replaced at some point.

Good luck and nice rides! I've always liked the Fiero, almost bought a GT myself back in the day.
