where some bold thief had stolen one or more right off the test track.
Then, to make matters worse, had someone inside the factory that fiddled with the SN so they got numbers that looked legit. I would have thought that, computers being what they are, all Ferrari would have to do is have each authorized service point enter the SN of a car and then a red flag (and maybe bells and whistles) would go off once the number is not one legimately issued to a Boxer. On the other hand Boxers were at one time gray (or is it grey?) market so maybe the US distributors of Ferrari didn't want to know or police cars that US dealers were not importing.

Also I recently went to the FCA gathering in the desert and saw several nice Boxers in the concours. If someone was to buy one now does the US gummint or Calif. even care that they are Federalized now or are they now blessed by being "grandfathered" by virtue of being over 25 years old.

Funny comment: I was once offered a Boxer cheap by a Fed who was selling a lot of confiscated material from a drug dealer at a public auction around Compton area. I naively asked:"But won't I have to get it Federalized?" and she looked and me and smiled and said "Don't worry about it," indicating to me that cash talks and you-know-what-walks when it comes to meeting the regs.

ALL Boxers are grey cars. There was never a NEW US spec Boxer, only those converted for import.
The 17 digit VINs didn't start until 1980, odds are the computer records didn't either.
You can't CARFAX anything before 1980.
This might narrow things down a bit
