My friend is too embarassed to ask here, so i thought I would do a search in his behalf.

Well guess what? I could find no definitive answer on how to check the dry sump tank, either on F-Chat or in the manual.

My assumption, gleaned from reading between the lines and my own experience, is toward warming up the engine/oil for about 10 minutes, up to 1/2 hour. Then, shutting the engine down, letting the oil settle down for 1-2 minutes, and checking with the dipstick.

If there IS something published, believe me I looked for it before I asked such an embarassing question.

    Thanks in advance,
JM3 on behalf of his friend.

Oil needs to be in excess of 170 degrees F. Check within 30 seconds after turning off motor. If you can touch the oil cap with your hand it is not nearly hot enough. A little low is better than a little high.

    Was the owners manual consulted?

I couldn't find it anywhere. Maybe I'm blind today. The only reference I could find was in the workshop manual, the section on "running in" where it is advised to check the oil and water levels before "using the car".

One neat thing about buying or finding the Adobe files, is that you can open up the owners manual in Adobe, and then do a search for "oil" or "belts" or "sticky switches". I will try this in a bit to see what I may have missed!

    thanks, Jay

In their infinite wisdom Ferrari on the F1 cars took out the oil temp gauge so they could keep the clock? Duh!!!

If that is the case you have to wait until the cap is hot enough to cause serious burns, Then ck it.

As stated you check it just after shut off of the engine. You can also check it with the engine running. I have checked it both ways and get the same reading. I'll check it when the engine is running, go shut off the engine, and then check it again, same reading.
