The Effective Executive is a must read.

Good managers are not born...they are all made. It is a learned art.

Good mangers are honest and demand honesty.
Good managers are loyal and demand loyalty.
Good managers are good communicators. They know that blind agreement will kill a company. They ask the tough questions and reward honest answers. They are committed to the truth.

Good mangers set priorities.
They know that their time is limited so they focus on what is vital to the company and it's future.

Bob Prosen's book is worth reading. He focuses on the execution of a strategy. There are a lot of business books on strategic planning, but few on day-to-day staff management.

Analyze, proseletize, implement. Having said that, praise in public, criticize in private. Mentor.

Gauge success based on the doable. Gauge failure based on the undoable. Accept each.
