While perusing the local recycler (I like to do my part for the planet) I noticed a nice aluminum (that's al-u-min-e-um for you British) NACA duct under a Porsche Cayenne near the tranny, probably to cool the frammis. The voice in my head asked "Bruce, that thing's cool, what can you do with that?" I didn't have an answer, but to shut him up, I bought the thing and hung it on my wall for a few weeks.
Then it came to me. Put it on my car somewhere!
Knowing that if I duct taped it onto the trunk lid I'd get criticized and have to hide my face, I decided to put it under the car. I took off the underside louvers, measured with my finger joints, cut up the louver panel, trimmed the duct, added a little curlicue piece, and VOILA! I got a little cooler for the back of the alternator. Probably shoulda put it under the seat to cool my ba**s.

Nice mod, I think cooling the alternator will not harm at all. And maybe increases its lifetime.

I hate to criticize other people's efforts but can't help but feel your running a risk with this mod on 2 levels.

    1) your creating a feed for dirt and particularly water to be fed straight into your alternator - if you go through a deep enough puddle you'll create a stream straight into it - note how the vents next to it are in the opposite direction to the one you've created.

    2) More importantly, if you accidentally bottom out this aluminium panel (don't mean yours but the one its mounted on) will deform and you may push your vent into the path of the belt which could prove quite serious! :-(

Your car of course but would remove it TBH - hope Ive not caused offence but wouldn't want to see your car damaged unnecessarily - sorry! :-(

    Nice Mod Bruce!

Only thing you forgot to do is paint it black. Or did you not paint to so you could be even MORE of a show off. LOL! :p

Moi? Show off? Nooooooo, I would never do that.

Alternate answer: No, I didnt paint it black because I didn't want the heat absorption properties of the black paint to affect the cooling properties of unit. Considered polishing it to make it slipperyer. Cooling vs downforce.....always a conundrum.

Yeah but that naca duct creates drag.

Little tip...upgrade your 90 amp alternator with doge Durango internals...you now have 117 amp unit. Use the Lexus regulator.

Yeah, but by removing my windshield wipers I reduced the drag elsewhere. And more drag on the bottom of the car, less on top should keep the car more planted at 250+ doncha think?

Plugz, I've heard if you also use extra virgin olive oil on the windscreen as well, you'll get another 0.003 mph out of her. That's tantamount to an extra 0.0005bhp or the same as ensuring there's no dust between your accelerator pedal and the carpet. Got to be worth it. Also the screws that hold the side vents on cause tremendous drag..... But then putting 8 small nylon caps over them is going to kill your weight saving...... I'm going to leave that conundrum with you mate, although if you ensure you wear lightweight socks when driving maybe that will offset it? :)

(Btw Plugz, more drag under the car, less over it increases the air pressure under it while reducing it over the top surface. You create lift and what you get is a car that is far less planted at speed. Sorry, know you weren't being totally serious (I hope) but just for future reference.)

(Making notes, to-do list for today)
Would lightweight socks make me "light in the loafers?"

    Less rolling resistance?
    (Curses, foiled again.)

BTW I asked the question about this part on a Porsche forum... here is the response I received:

    ***************
It's part of the undertray part #955 504 231 01, and not available separately according to the parts catalog.
    ***************

    Costs about 130$...
