Yes, $3.25M was the final bid on the McLaren F1, plus the 10% commission on top for a total of $3.575M. Not the highest price ever paid for an F1 road car, but a very strong result. Certainly a bit higher than I was expecting given all the other cars that had lower than expected numbers.

The 250 SWB was hammered at $5.55M and then the 10% commission and an additional 2.5% in Import Duties if it is staying in the USA. Besides being 1 of 20, the description says that the restoration was completed by the factory and that it is Classiche Certified.

I was in travelling US with Australian friend when he bought the Baja Boot in the late 80's to run a rally in South America. Rally never happened & he sold the car at Kruses auction in Auburn possibly 89/90. What I do recall is the car had plaques for every rally/race it competed in attached to the dashboard. Kruse stored all cars outside in tents & first morning, near all the plaques were stolen. I do have some photos of it at that time if of interest.

    From Sports Car Market:

SCM Publisher Keith Martin commented "Some thought our $140m in projected sales for Monterey was hopelessly optimistic in the face of a flailing economy. Yet the overall sales of $172m surpassed that prediction by $32m and surpassed last year's total of $120m by a staggering $52m. This proved that there is still enormous discretionary wealth in the upper echelon of the collector car world. Further, I believe these sales results are evidence that in the face of lackluster stock market and still-falling real estate prices, investors are moving their money into a segment of the market that is showing appreciation, which is collector cars. My next prediction - hang on to your hats, the roller coaster is just beginning to gather steam."

While the auction companies are still furiously working around the clock to get deals done, here are the preliminary results we have. These totals and Top 5 cars are subject to change. We'll have an updated special Monterey edition later this week. (All overall sale totals include buyer's premiums; the Bonham's top 5 sales do NOT include premiums).

Actually, the number went up not too long ago, depending on your opinion of the provenance of the recently "restored/completed" convertible...

    Wow......

I'm not so sure I can share Mr. Martin's enthusiasm or views on the market.

Lot's of cash pent up in the current stock market downturn, together with a lot of people cashing out at market peak (who knows) in collector car values and moving back INTO cash liquidity.

Then our neighbor Mr. O'quinn hitting a tree at 79MPH in a 40MPH zone.
Gil Nickels car fits a similar situation, he's gone and it represents an overly large share of his widow's portfolio.

It's certainly a Perfect Storm of good cars hitting the block, Mr. G has commented several times about vehicles offered to him in private sale.

I can certainly see the reasons this years volumn is up, but this "up, up and away" may be a bit optimistic.....but then, I should have bought Goodyear at $3.99 a share...:D

+1 although be interesting to see if the street cars or the race cars (many now made road legal) end up being worth more long term?

thats a very good guess. Also, will anyone care what the original colors were since mcclaren will redo them at the factory for any new owner? Its going to be interesting...

To me one of the most interesting things is going to be how any carbon tubbed car is going to preserve...

Of course race cars that one will be worth more than ones that didn't... but how will a nothing race car fair against a good street car???

The car that won Le Mans will always be the top dog, then cars with good race history down to cars with dodgy race history, etc.

Not many people care about who the previous owners were unless it was a Beetle or somebody at that level.

    Jim,

A friend of mine was one of the team in George Hurst's shop that built that thing. He knows all the guys who were involved and are still around.
